Book Description

September 12, 2003
Some view witches and witchcraft a threat to the American way of life. Others insist that wiccas are merely the practitioners of a harmless alternative religion that strives to bring about positive change with their magic. This anthology presents the arguments on both sides of this controversial subject. (20030301)

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8-"Good or Evil" would be a suitable subtitle for this discussion. Using biblical references, two essays in this collection condemn witchcraft and its practitioners as forbidden. Another warns against the wicked lure of magic as presented in the "Harry Potter" books. Still another argues that witches in the United States military undermine defense readiness. The second group portrays modern witches as benign and principled practitioners of an ancient craft. Two essays counter the attacks against Harry Potter's magic and Wiccans in the military. While the introduction recounts the history of the persecution of witches in Europe, England, and America, the epilogue adds details derived from witch confessions, ending with some description of modern Wiccan beliefs and practices. Contact information is provided in an annotated list of 11 organizations concerned with witchcraft and cults. The generous list of books and periodical articles features all but one source published since 1990. The great majority of these publications offer explanations of Wicca and witchcraft rather than criticism of them. This is a useful introduction to current debate over witchcraft.
