I love all of my Bosch tools, and this one is no exception. There are larger, more powerful rotary hammers, of course. This one is very capable for all normal home building or remodeling tasks. It will drill holes fast and install anchors in concrete or masonry in a few seconds. It drills most concrete as if it is drilling butter. My favorite use is to remove bricks when masonry repair or a larger door or window need to be installed.

The trick with brick removal is removing the first brick. As soon as the bricks are no longer in compression, the bricks remove quickly. I do this by turning the tool to hammer function only, installing a 1-inch chisel bit, and applying the chisel to the brick. Bricks in difficult starter positions, perhaps in the center of a wall, are best attacked by first drilling a series of 1/2-inch holes across the face of the brick. When the chisel bit is pressed against the brick, the brick turns into dust, but it is not thrown about as much as one might expect.

This is a commercial-quality tool and will last a long time if it is maintained. It is very important to follow the maintenance procedures in the manual. Remember, this tool works in a dusty environment. Use proper eye protection, a dust mask, and clean the tool during and after use.

Remember, also, if you need to do heavier work, rent or buy the appropriate larger tool. Bosch makes them, too.

This was my first ever reconditioned tool (bought at the same time as the Recon Bosch Multi X, no issues with that tool either). I felt I was taking a risk, but I'm glad I did. The hammer drill looks and works perfectly. The only blemish is that the factory carved or etched "RECON" in small print into a rubber area. Oh well.
The Bulldogs are awesome hammer drills. There are (much) larger rotary hammers - if all you do is drill through concrete and masonry and can justify $500-1000 and more. For normal construction and remodelling, the Bulldog is the best for Tapcons and anchors like Red Heads and such. Nothing faster.
One tip: Use no more pressure than neccesary to keep the bit against the work. When drilling into a floor, the weight of the tool is usually all you need. Pushing hard only dulls the bits and they aren't exactly cheap.
The bits are SDS and that's part of the secret of good rotary hammers. They eliminate the possibilty of a bit getting stuck in concrete and the chuck spinning around it, and also, I believe, maximize the effect of the hammer. I might be wrong on this, but I think while your average hammer drill with a Jacob's-style chuck has the "hammer" striking a part of the chuck assembly which is holding onto the bit, an SDS hammer is striking the bit itself. A direct, no middle-man use of all the power available.
As for being reconditioned, all I know is I'm happy I tried it. Saved at least $70 which buys a nice assortment of bits and chisels.

I purchased this hammer drill after reading the other reviews and after having purchased other refurbished items from CPO Outlets. To my dismay, when I received the drill it was broken. It cosmetically looked okay with a few dings and scratches here and there (about as may as you get after a few uses) but nothing major. When I put in drill mode, it would spin up fine then slow down way down, whine loudly and start clicking like it was in hammer/drill mode.

I just sent it back (they are paying for the return) and I am hoping they can redeem themselves on the next one so I can give a better review...

Update:
I received the replacement hammer drill and it was in even better cosmetic condition than the first. I tested it out, and it worked great. I'm very happy with the replacement and am leaving four stars out of five because the first one was dead on arrival.

I purchased this tool for a single project, working on our new front porch. The design calls for 12 3/8" holes to be bored into a 15-year-old concrete slab for mounting strike anchors. So far I've drilled four of the holes, and I must say that this tool has turned what I was expecting to be a real fight into a pleasure.

Prior to this, my only experience with drilling masonry was an attempt two years ago to mount a door stop into a freshly-laid tile-over-slab floor. I managed that installation with a quarter-inch impact-rated masonry bit, the hammer drill setting on my Milwaukee cordless drill, and a great display of stubbornness. Boring the inch-deep hole took nearly ten minutes, and totally destroyed the masonry bit. As you can imagine, when this project came up and demanded TWELVE holes of half again the diameter and four times the depth, I decided that some better tooling was on the list. This Bosch DELIVERED.

Each hole took perhaps twenty seconds to drill into the aged concrete, using a 10" Bosch bit purchased from a local big-box store, and the bit looked as good at the end of the four as it did at the beginning. After brushing off the dust, you'd never know it had been used at all.

A few closing notes:

1: Wear ear plugs, this is a LOUD tool.
2: I vastly over-purchased for the job, but in this case overkill makes the project EASY.
3: This reconditioned tool looks new. There was a very slight amount of concrete dust on it, and it came in a 'reconditioned' cardboard box instead of the normal one. If it had been in a normal box, I would never have even noticed it wasn't brand new from the factory. A heck of a deal!

UPDATE - 02/16/11
I've used the tool several more times since I wrote the review.
