This is no ordinary toaster. Besides the fact that it may have more controls than an average oven, it features custom settings for two slices--if you're not toasting a full capacity of four--a bagel setting, a defrost setting, and a reheat setting. It even allows you to regulate the degree of toast darkness, and its memory chip will always toast at that desired darkness until it's manually changed. There's also a slide-out tray on the bottom of the toaster for removing old crumbs, and a damp cloth is all that's necessary to clean the exterior. The Cuisinart® Total Touch 4-Slice Electronic toaster lets you toast everything from bagels to muffins thoroughly and evenly. Two wide, long slots hold four slices, and the Perfect Timing™ Touchpad Control has indicator lights for even toasting. The 2-Slice button prevents overtoasting of 2 slices, and the bagel button makes perfect bagels and english muffins. A defrost button defrosts and toasts frozen bread and a reheat button reheats without browning. There is also a combination setting for custom toasting and a cancel button to cancel in mid-cycle. The custom Your Choice™ Browning Memory remembers setting, and the Always Even™ Touchpad Shade Control provides even browning.

I shopped long and hard for a toaster to replace the one I had. Deciding the try the high tech approach I purchased this toaster. It pomised lots of cool features like a defrost and single slice setting and a pop up button. Unfortunately, the longer I used it the more problematic the toaster became. The toaster toasts very unevenly. The most vexing problem is that the lights on the front panal turn off between use (they are supposed to stay on when the toaster is plugged in) but the heating elements will heat heat if the start lever is depressed. I suppose this could be potentially dangerous. To get the toaster to work I have to put the toast in, slide the handle down and wait for it to pop the toast up. This drill needs to be repeated three or four times before the toaster will actually begins work properly with the front panal lights lighting up. When toasting whole wheat bread I have to set the toaster to the highest setting and then toast the bread a second time before the toast is properly toasted. This often leads to burnt toast if I don't get the bread out in time. Bottom line, I would, and am, looking elsewhere for a better toaster. This was not cheap investment considering the poor performance.

I bought the new version of this toaster about six months ago and I have been disappointed in its performance. The toaster gives very uneven results, often almost burning one side of a slice of bread while leaving the other side barely toasted. The adjustments to allow different settings do not seem to correspond to the results -- the toaster continues to almost burn one side of the bread even at lower settings. One advantage of this toaster is that there is enough space for larger items such as bagels.

I hit the one click button before reading the reviews and thought OH NO! Then I decided to give it a try. I purchased a reconditioned Kitchenaide stand mixer and have been happy with it for 12 years. I believe with reconditioned items they are gone over by an actual technician and not just kicked off a production line and you have a good chance of getting a high quality product. Well, I immediately went out and bought, bread, bagels, and muffins to try in my new toaster. I am extremely impressed with ALL the results as is my husband. The only thing I haven't tried is the defrost feature. I am very happy with this product. Maybe I got the other reviewers reconditioned unit. Works for me :-)
