This is a reconditioned power tool. Reconditioned generally means that the tool has been returned to the manufacturer, who brings the tool back to like new condition. Some tools may contain cosmetic blemishes.

The DW988 18-volt 1/2-inch adjustable-clutch drill/driver/hammerdrill uses a DeWalt-built high-torque motor to deliver 450 in./lbs. of torque for drilling bigger holes and driving bigger screws. Besides boosting torque, DeWalt is the first company to add a three-speed transmission that produces more rpm for faster drilling and driving applications. Low speed (first gear) and high speed (second gear) are similar to other cordless drills currently available. However, the new MAX third speed is 38 percent faster, with a range of 0 to 2,000 rpm. Ideal for jobs that previously required the high speed, the MAX third speed is noticeably faster for wood and metal screwdriving and drilling, and especially for hammerdrilling into masonry, where the MAX speed drills holes up to 33 percent faster. The bpm range on the MAX third speed ranges from 0 to 34,000. The DW988 features a 1/2-inch ratcheting chuck lock with carbide jaws to keep a tighter grip on the bit. The ratcheting chuck lock consists of two elements: an automatic spindle lock that allows users to tighten down on the chuck twice as hard, and ratcheting action to prevent the chuck sleeve from loosening during the job. Other features include all-metal gearing and a metal gear case for durability, and an anti-slip comfort grip to reduce user fatigue. The DW988K-2 includes the drill/driver/hammerdrill, two XR+ batteries, double-ended screwdriver bit, 360-degree side handle, and carrying case.

I have purchased DEWALT in the past, when I was flush. Since then I have had to settle for other, less expensive, hand tools.

I can't tell that this reconditioned item is used. And it has a better motor, features, and "fit and feel" then it's competition. Highly recommended.

At first I was nervous about buying a reconditioned cordless tool. But after already owning one of these drills purchased new, I decided the price was worth the risk for such a great tool.

After receiving the 2 drills I ordered, I couldn't be more happy. You'd never even know they were reconditioned. The drills themselves were in flawless shape and the batteries didn't even have scuffs on the bottom. I'd guess these were probably just customer returns that had never seen a bit.

I've used the same drill for ~2 years now and haven't found any problems with it. Its more than powerful enough for anything I've thrown at it. Battery life seems to be very good. I especially like the metal constructed tool-free chuck, making bit changes quick and easy. With 3 speed gearing, 20+ torque settings, and a variable speed trigger this drill can do it all.

With the included batteries, case, and side handle, this kit is a true steal! If you plan on purchasing this drill, don't hesitate to buy the refurb. Bravo Dewalt! Highly recommended!

Almost free, price of two 18V batteries is $110 on sale at Home Depot. That means I got a charger, drill, case for $20 more. I should have bought two or three for Christmas Gifts.
