This review is from: Factory-Reconditioned DeLonghi PAC290SRB Portable Air Conditioner, 8500 btu (Kitchen)
We have an attic room in our house that we always avoided in the summertime because it has always felt like an oven, even though there is central air in the house. The room is approximately 175 square feet. I despise window air conditioners mainly because of the installation, and also because they have to be removed at the end of the summer. I ordered this with the hopes that this would solve the problem. All I can say is, this thing is incredible!! It was over 90 degrees here last night, and normally that would make that room feel like over 100. This little unit made the room so cold, we had to shut it down early this morning. It was almost frosty....The air conditoner arrived with everything I needed to start, and it took me a total of 20 minutes to set it up and read the instruction manual. It could be set up so it can be moved, or permanent. I set it up so I can move it to other areas of the house in case I want to shut down the central air, or if I just want to cool one room in the house. It is an attractive unit, and fairly short. Since we just put in new carpeting, I had a friend of mine make me a metal pan to place under the unit, just in case of water leakage. I doubt it will be a problem, but I figured better safe then sorry. The pan also allows the unit to be level at all times, as according to the directions, the air conditioner should be perfectly level. It is fairly quiet, not much louder then a window unit. Edited to add: You can use the air conditioner 2 ways-if you add water to the container in the unit, it makes the air frosty cold. However, the water does have to be replenished every 8 hours or so. You can also use the unit dry, and it will still make the room cool. You don't have to worry about ruining the unit when the water runs out because it is acceptable to use the air conditioner without it. I have found that on the really hot, stuffy nights here in NJ (especially when the sun has been baking on the ceiling all day), that it is nice to add the water and have it really cold. You do have to use a bottle of descaling liquid (to clean out the unit) every few weeks or so 1 of which they included with the unit. Bottom lline is there is some upkeep, but imho, it is very much worth it when you consider how well it works.

Great Deal for Refurbished, August 28, 2004

I generally shy away from reconditioned products however this deal seemed too good to pass up. I have this portable in my house and it is like an arctic freezer now. I love it. This thing really works. I have a lot of computer equipment in my room, which needs to stay cool at all times. I have never had one problem since I installed this portable AC. Not to mention I can transfer units between rooms, because it is portable. I reccomend a portable air conditioner to anyone looking to stay cool.

Suprisingly Effective..., September 7, 2005
This review is from: Factory-Reconditioned DeLonghi PAC290SRB Portable Air Conditioner, 8500 btu (Kitchen)
This was the second portable air conditioner that I ordered from Amazon. The first one, from an independent dealer, never arrived even after a whole month of waiting -- and I was very annoyed since I spent half the summer waiting for my product. This product, did also take a very long time to arrive, and it arrived four days after the maximum promised time. However, it was well worth it. My house has very high ceilings, and two bedrooms upstairs that get about 10-12 degrees hotter than downstairs. When the central air is on, downstairs would have to be freezing before upstairs feels livable (the architectural design was badly thought out). So I got this for the two bedrooms upstairs, one bathroom (that has no window and the steam from the shower remains indoors unless fanned), and a small hallway. The air conditioner cools the entire upstairs section of the house without any effort. As the previous reviewers say, it makes it chilly in almost no time, and the best part is that I can use it without any water -- cooling off about 5-10 degrees, easily. It's a little larger than I had expected and it's quite heavy as well. It was a little beat up when I received it, and it took two people to carry it up the stairs. The manual is not very detailed and the instructions are not very good, but this isn't something that takes a brain surgeon to figure out. It's pretty much assembled, and it's quick and easy to set up even without a manual. As far as performance, there's no dripping water, and it performs as well as my central air. Definitely worth the buck, and I'm hoping to keep it for a very long long time.
