Product Description

Keep warm during the cool months while conserving energy with the Solaris Oil Radiator Heater from industry leader, DeLonghi. Solo, the radiator heater best serves 12-by-14-foot rooms and smaller, proving itself handy as a cost-effective alternative or accessory to a central heating system. The inclusion of a GFI plug affords safe radiator use in the bathroom to combat the shocking chill often experienced upon stepping out of a steaming hot shower. DeLonghi crafted the radiator in Italy, using rustproof metal for even heat distribution and resilience. Extra-wide feet discourage the unit from tipping over. Three power settings allow flexibility for diverse rooms and personal heating needs. For energy efficiency, the heater runs low at 600 watts or medium at 900 watts to slowly spread warmth. On high at 1500 watts, the radiator brings full heat to the room with extra speed. Users direct the room's temperature for comfort with an adjustable thermostat. The thermostat settings range from 1 to 6, with heats increasing in proportion to the setting number. With a 24-hour programmable timer, the heater offers 96 options in terms of temperature, wattage, duration, and activation. An antifreeze function engages should the indoor temperature fall below 44 degrees F, while the heater also automatically shuts off upon knock-over. The radiator employs pure diathermic oil, permanently sealed within for enhanced safety. Though the radiator may give off an unpleasant aroma initially, such odors, while annoying, are harmless and cease after initial use. DeLonghi advises against placing the radiator under a power outlet, outdoors, or near flammable liquids. Avoid running the power line under carpets. Thorough safety guidelines and assembly instructions are included. The radiator measures 23 by 17-1/5 by 7 inches and weighs 22.9 pounds upon shipping. Limited 90 day warranty.

I live in an apartment in NYC and don't have a thermostat, so sometimes my place can get cold enough that I need some heat to boost the temperature. So far as I know, consumer space heaters come in three categories: ceramic (which I've never used); electric and oil-filled (electric but the oil heats the metal radiator instead of the electric element heating the air directly). IMO, oil-filled radiators are better-made, safer, and more efficient than the electric element models. DeLonghi used to make an oil-filled radiator with a fan that would heat a room quite quickly. For whatever reason, it's no longer sold, so if you want an oil-filled radiator, you'll have to pick this one or a similar model. I've used several now, and this one is significantly better than the vertical style DeLonghi, probably because the design disperses the heat more efficiently. There's no real thermostat (though there is a dial for setting the amount of heat), but it does have a timer feature that could be set to cycle the radiator on and off.

I bought the reconditioned model because I'd just as soon buy one that worked rather than one that was new but didn't work. Mine arrived in new packaging and is physically indistinguishable from a new radiator. Recommended, but keep in mind that these things consume a LOT of electricity, so you'll want to use it carefully to conserve energy and keep your utility bill from spiking too much.

PS: This particular model had almost no "new oil" smell when I turned it on. It's not a pleasant smell but it does dissipate after an hour or so. Perhaps a reconditioned model has already been broken in and so will smell less.

I knew upfront from other reviews that when you first start the DeLonghi radiator they have a bit of an oil smell. So when my radiators (I bought two) arrived, I put them in an open place, turned them to max, and let them burn off the factory oil smell. The smell was gone in about two hours and I brought them inside. They work great and best of all, they are quiet, quiet, quiet (only a small click when the thermostat turns on and off). I use them in two rooms. One room is 10x10 with an 8 foot ceiling which I use as a home office. It heats the room very quickly. The other delonghi is in a room that is 10x12 with a very tall gable ceiling (12 foot at the peak). Initially I thought that all the heat would just accumulate at the peak, but it didn't. The DeLonghi radiator fins moved enough warm to keep the whole place warm. These radiators are small and easy to move around. I don't use the thermostat because they heat sufficiently fast that I don't need to bother with the program mode. The one thing I like about these radiators is that they don't dry the air the way that the electric heaters do (I have one and it always smell of burned dust and the air is very dry afterwards). With any radiator, please make sure that you have fresh ventilation in the room.

It's mid-January and I've already 'burned through' two of these heaters since late October. They seem to work great...and they do, for a little while...but then one day they just suddenly stop working. It's true that I've left the heater on for 24+ hours non-stop at times (it's the only source of heat in my apartment), but that shouldn't matter, should it...? They should last more than four to six weeks, shouldn't they...? Well, so far, it has been my experience that they don't. WTF?

I purchased this space heater for my appartment late in 2006 when the temperatures in California threatened to go below 32F. It arrived quickly, and I found a good placement for it - according to the instructions under the coldest window in the room to heat.

To put it simple, this radiator surpassed my highest expectations. Not only is it easy to set up and control, it also creates a lot of warmth throughout the room even at low heat settings. Even better, the built-in thermostat controls the temperature perfectly. And compared to heat fans it is silent, yet distributes the heat perfectly.

Couldn't be any happier with this purchase :)

The factory reconditioning is a mockery. I do not think it has anything to do with Amazon. The heater had a dent on one of the elements (altough there were no signs of mishandling on the box). The control board was comming off...Terrible. I returned it immediately.
