Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Delivering 220 airwatts of suction power, this canister vacuum cleaner features advanced Root Cyclone technology to ensure thorough, efficient cleaning with no clogging or loss of suction. The unit's hard-floor tool provides improved pick-up on hard surfaces, while its quick-draw Telescope Reach extends instantly for stair and high-reach cleaning. Turn the motorized brushbar on to remove dirt and pet hair from carpets, or turn it off to protect rugs and delicate floors. Thanks to the vacuum cleaner's money-saving, lifetime HEPA filter, air expelled from the unit contains up to 150 times less mold and bacteria than common breathing air. Other highlights include a motorized cleaner head for easy maneuverability and cleaning in tight spaces, a 16-2/5-foot cord, and 4/9-gallon bin. In addition, the hose and wand compress and wrap for compact storage. The vacuum cleaner measures 17-2/3 by 11 by 13-4/5 inches and carries a six-month warranty.

From the Manufacturer

Dyson’s Stowaway canister vacuum is ideal for those who want the convenience and store-ability of a canister but also want a floor-cleaning machine that doesn’t lose suction. It easily wraps to store away, as the hose and wand collapse and wrap for storing purposes. Because of its motorized cleaner head, the Stowaway provides an effortless steering experience, making it easy to maneuver and clean in tight spaces. It has a foot operated brush control, so you can operate it without bending down, and a clear polycarbonate bin that lets you see when it’s ready to empty.

Dyson Stowaway: The Only Canister that Doesn’t Lose Suction

The Stowaway canister vacuum utilizes Dyson’s renowned Root12Cyclone technology. The Dyson cyclone spins air at high speed, so dirt and dust are thrown out of the airflow and collected in the bin, not on filters or bags. Unlike other vacuums, a Dyson doesn't clog and lose suction, so it picks up more dirt. Also, the vacuum’s motorized brushbar has powerful bristles which remove dirt and pet hair from carpets, and it has no belt to replace. The Stowaway is very hygienic--its clean expelled exhaust air has up to 150 times less bacteria and mold than air you breathe. Lifetime HEPA filtration is another way that this vacuum keeps things clean (it’s been approved for allergy sufferers by the British Allergy Foundation). The extra cleaning tools are stored board for simple and rapid access, and, for easier cleaning in confined areas like cars, the tools can be fitted directly to the end of the wand. The Dyson Stowaway also boasts a durable, tough construction--it’s made from ABS and polycarbonate, materials used to manufacture crash helmets.

What Makes Dyson Different

Bags Clog Suction

When the vacuum cleaner is empty, clean air flows into the machine and out through the pores of the bag. However as soon as you start to use the machine the bag starts to fill with dust and debris. The bag acts as a filter and the machine starts to lose suction. This is because the pores of the bag begin to clog with the dust that the machine has picked up. This restricts the airflow which causes loss of suction power.

Other Bagless Systems Clog like Bags

  1. When the vacuum cleaner is new, clean air flows through the container and out through the filters.
  2. However as soon as you start to use the machine the container starts to fill with dust and debris. The filters clog, and the machine starts to lose suction.
  3. This is because the surface of the filter becomes blocked with dust, restricting the airflow which causes a loss of suction power.

Only Dyson Doesn't Lose Suction
Dyson Root Cyclone technology uses 200,000G of centrifugal force in the cyclones to filter dust and remove dirt from the airflow efficiently. Because there is nothing to obstruct the airflow, it doesn't clog and doesn't lose suction.

Dyson has the Most Advanced Cyclone Technology

  1. Powerful suction spins out larger dirt and debris.

  2. The shroud filters out fluff and lint.

  3. Centrifugal forces spin out the tiny harmful particles.

  4. Cleaner air is expelled into your home.
The Dyson Story

James Dyson

You know the feeling when some everyday product lets you down. You wish someone could solve the problem. James Dyson does that. He is a man who likes to make things work better. With his research team he has developed products that have achieved sales of over $10 billion worldwide.

The Bag Problem
In 1978, while vacuuming his home, James Dyson realized his bag vacuum cleaner was constantly losing suction power. He noticed how dust quickly clogged the pores of the bag and blocked the airflow, so that suction dropped rapidly. He set to work to solve this problem. 5 years and 5,127 prototypes later, the world's first cyclonic bagless vacuum cleaner arrived.

No Place for New Technology
James Dyson offered his invention to major manufacturers. One by one they turned him down, apparently not interested in new technology. They seemed determined to continue selling bags, worth $500 million every year. Later, Hoover's Vice President for Europe, Mike Rutter, said on UK national TV: "I do regret that Hoover as a company did not take the product technology off Dyson; it would have lain on the shelf and not been used".

Editor's note: This is a reconditioned vacuum. Reconditioned generally means that the appliance has been returned to the manufacturer, so it may contain cosmetic blemishes. This item has a six-month warranty.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pretty amazing vacuum, September 14, 2009

Factory-Reconditioned Dyson 12446-02 DC21 Canister Vacuum

Just got it last Friday to replace a Sharp canister. We are in our 40's with 3 young children and a white short hair dog, with black couchs and chairs.

Negs brought up by other reviewers first:

Heavy: Yes, but it's all motor. Powerful motor=heavy weight. Since it's well balanced with good handles I didn't have a problem moving it around. It will follow you straight as long as you snap the center hose conection, (which I didn't at first). If you don't attach this it will not track you when you pull it.

Short cord: As short as the last 3 vacuums I've had. It's not a issue to me.

Plastic construction: It's acrylic and very strong. If it was metal it would weigh even more. I don't expect anything to break unless I throw it over my head down the stairs. The tube that extends seems to be made of powdered metal compressed into form. That's not cheap to do but it's lightweight and strong. Rather than cheap the light weight chassis come across as modern and high tech.

Hard to empty: Couldn't be easier. I take the canister off and put it down into a trash bin before I empty it. No dust. No issue. Easy.

Tube pinching: It can happen. You just have to unwind the tube correctly and it won't pinch for the rest of the vacuuming. Anyone who has used a canister has done this and corrected it within seconds. Really, not a big deal.

Tube collapsing: The clicks are very soft. You just have to pull hard to engage them. Once it locks you will not have this problem, it will stay locked. With my kids the house is never quiet enough to hear the clicks, so I just give it a hard pull.

For myself this is the best vacuum I've ever used. It's a smart design with clever packaging. Love the way it all attachs together for storage. You can change tools in seconds.

The Dyson pulls more stuff in one vacuuming than the sharp (bagless) did in a full week of vacuuming. That's a game changer for me. My dog shed a huge amount of fur on our black bedcover in seconds when I wasn't looking. It would have been 30-45 mins with the sharp + a tape roller. The dyson was taking it off in one pull with the hard floor attachment. Just amazing.

Same with our black couch, which is a constant battle with our white dog. The dyson makes this so easy I could kiss it. I used to put so much time trying to get the fur off before my wife would see it and be rightly upset. Now my dog (and his owner) are safe

The end of the tube is a head unit that snaps into the floor motor brush. This is the only thing you have to adjust too when your using small attachments. It would be nice if they had (I might try to make it) a hose that plugs into the end of the head just for small uses. What I do like about it is you can stand when doing things I had to bend for before. Corner cleaning, ceiling molding, couch and chairs, stuff like that.

I LOVE THIS VACUUM! NO REGRETS!!!!! :)

9-17-09 update. I put the brush attachment on and vaccumed my dog. He wasn't thrilled but I took off so much hair (like brushing) that I'm going to do it weekly. The brush is very soft and it didn't hurt him.

Hose length is very long and the motor is much quieter than the Sharp canister the Dyson replaced. It is also very easy to go from hardwood to carpet with the motorhead switch that your foot uses.

1-19-2010

Update. Going strong with zero problems or issues. Dropped it down a half flight of stairs a few months ago and held my breath but so far so good. Nothing broken or acting up. My rebuilt one came with a hard floor atachment that is very light and works wonderful. Make sure your rebuilt one has that attachment, or pick one up if you have hardwood floors or tile.

Up date. 01-7-2011. It's still going strong. No problems or issues. I love our Dyson! I wash the filters a few times a year. That's it. Great product.

Update 11/09/2011 The Dyson is still going strong. No problems at all. Same fantastic piece of cleaning artwork it was when I first purchased it. We are not easy with it but it's been a monster. I one hundred percent recommend this vacuum.

4.0 out of 5 stars love the dyson canister, July 5, 2009
This review is from: Factory-Reconditioned Dyson 12446-02 DC21 Canister Vacuum (Kitchen)
we love the vacuum. It really does suck everything up! There are a few design changes that I had to get used to but only because I had been using the Kenmore canister vacuums for the last 22 years. The cord is shorter than I would like, the on off switch is on the canister so it is a little inconvenient and to change the floor and rug heads need you to push a button to release instead of a foot release, again just inconvenient because of what I am used to. But if any Dyson design people are out there take note...
The canister fills fast for me but I have a dog that sheds and incredible amount. But without having to change a bag it really isn't a problem. The design is small and compact and very easy to maneuver. I couldn't be happier with it.

1.0 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY A DYSON, July 17, 2009
This review is from: Factory-Reconditioned Dyson 12446-02 DC21 Canister Vacuum (Kitchen)
I purchased this vacuum the first week of March. After snapping the pieces together, I turned the unit on. The brush in the head spun for 15 seconds and stopped. I pressed the button on the head and the brush started spinning again... for 15 seconds. I was not certain if I was doing something wrong or if the vacuum simply did not work, so I called Dyson. The rep asked me a few questions and pronounced that the head was defective and that Dyson would ship me a replacement head. This sounded responsive so I agreed to this. Almost a month later the replacement head arrived. I snapped the new head on and when I started the vacuum the replacement head spun normally ... for 15 seconds. I then called Dyson back again. This time they said that I should take the vacuum to one of their local certified repair centers to be checked out. Again this sounded responsive so I agreed to do this. In retrospect this was a big mistake. I now realize that I should have immediately returned the vacuum to Amazon.com. Two weeks later the repair center said that the problem was a faulty electrical tube and that they had order the part from Dyson. That was three months ago. Since then the repair center has told me that Dyson promises to ship the replacement part next week ... nine times. Dyson themselves admit that they have never shipped the ordered part and has offered up numerous "the dog ate my homework" excuses such as a computer problem caused the part order to be lost, one shipping center thought the other shipping center would ship it, ect., ect., ect. It's now the end of July and the only thing I have to show for my money is a repair ticket and a great deal of my time wasted.

Dyson runs lots of ads portraying their company to be innovative and personable. Reality could not be further from the truth. Don't buy a Dyson!
