People love their pets, but pet hair is an entirely different story. Despite Fluffy’s sweet manner of snuggling up on the sofa for some purr time, that white, fluffy hair sticks to the upholstery like glue. And while wrestling with Bowser entertains dog and owner alike, the resultant film of golden retriever hair on the carpet fails to amuse. To tackle these animal-inflicted woes, it takes a certain breed of vacuum, a real animal. Enter Dyson’s Animal. From the UK-based company’s innovative The Ball line of vacuums, the Animal model best enjoys a bevy of features and tools to specifically conquer pet hair. Additionally, the vacuum demonstrates superior mobility, actually rolling on a ball for 360-degrees of twists and turns. The vacuum’s 10-amp motor is mounted within the ball for a low center of gravity while the cleaner head pivots to manuever furniture legs and corners.

Dyson crafted the vacuum in durable ABS and polycarbonate materials. The direct-drive brush bar uproots embedded debris from carpeting but benefits from push-button shutdown to prevent damage to delicate rugs or hardwood floors. The vacuum’s Root-8 Cyclone technology powerfully sucks dirt through the spacious channel for deposit in the see-through .71-gallon dustbin. To empty a full bin, the user need only push a button and hold the bin over a trash receptacle, eliminating minimal physical contact. A permanent, washable HEPA air filter ensures that collected allergens stay contained inside the vacuum. As a result of filtering, the released air contains 150 times less bacteria and mold. A built-in telescopic hose system allows the user to tend to stairs and curtains. The provided airflow nozzle assists in retrieving dust from crevices, while a low-reaching floor tool attaches to the hose to clean underneath beds and coffee tables. For stubborn pet hair, a mini-turbine head attachment powerfully sucks hair from upholstered furniture, rugs, and other pet-frequented areas. The Animal model also includes a carpet care kit to manage hairballs and other unsavory accidents. The vacuum’s power cord spans 37 feet, with a 51-foot maximum vacuum reach. A 90-day manufacturer’s warranty covers this item. Made in Malaysia, the vacuum measures 13-2/3 by 11-2/5 by 44-1/10 inches and weighs approximately 20 pounds.

4.0 out of 5 stars Warning to Obsessive Compulsives..., October 24, 2005
Read many many customer reviews, consumer research before deciding to splurge on Dyson DC15 Animal. Worth every penny. To lessen the shock on my husband, I presented seven clear plastic bags filled with dirt and dog hair and labeled with what room it came from--along with the invoice. Except that then he wanted to show everyone the dirt and I finally had to sneak it out to the garbage as it was embarassing to me. Received on a Friday, and caught him vacuuming twice over the weekend. My conclusion is that any new decent brand vacuum will work great at first and if comparing to an old worn out vacuum like our previous electrolux cannister. But this Dyson won't wear out belts or require as much time/money/maintenance to keep that original suction. It's cool to see how much dirt you're pulling up. Warning for obsessive compulsives--well, you can see where I'm going with that. Let's just say I vacuum a lot more now. I like seeing the brush moving. I like seeing dirt filling the cannister. Easy and not messy to empty if you follow directions as suggested for allergy users. The zig-zag ball movement thing is really cool and easy to manuever--no strain on my wrist. I love love the wand. Just as easy to use the tools as my cannister. Can vacuum the floor, then after a couple of moves--dust the top of my door moldings and ceiling fan. Most uprights don't have great tools or suction in their tools--this does. The extra tools that come with the Animal are ok--cleaned dog hair off my loveseat and vacuumed tiled bathrooms anyway. Cord is really long which meant I can vacuum my 1600 sq foot one level home without unplugging once. On other hand have to manuever around a cord. I thought retractable cord would be nice but husband says that might be a maintenance thing they don't want to worry about--that some vacuums have maintenance issues with that?? This is a heavy vacuum which I don't mind but I could feel in my upper arm the first couple of rooms. This would not be ideal for someone with weak upper body strength or someone who plans to lug up and down flights of stairs. The thing I love the most...My carpets nearly 2 years old were looking matted in places and dirty. I actually bought this to have a good vacuum before I scheduled them to be professionaly cleaned and created mud underneath. My carpets look brand new--fluffy, soft (so soft even my husband noticed!!), smell fresher, and look visibly cleaner and raised them right up like before. That alone was worth every penny to me to make thousands of dollars of carpeting look new. And even though I am still going to have them cleaned--they don't look like they NEED it now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!, September 22, 2005
By
lightnin21 (Bay Area, CA, USA) - See all my reviews
I just bought my DC-15 Animal from Sears two days ago. While it would have been a few dollars cheaper to buy it from Amazon, I was impatient to have this in my home, especially since I have read so many great reviews about its siblings. I have used it four times since I bought it and have collected 4 containers full of cat hair, lint, fuzz, etc. from my living room and hallway floor! We have a standard pile Dupont Stain master carpet in a medium sized apartment with 3 cats and I had always thought our old vacuum (an Eureka) was doing a decent job. Not at all compared to this new purple wonder!! I love vacuuming my carpet now! It's actually fun to dump out all of the crud I sucked off of my floor! This vacuum comes with all of the attachemnts like the DC-14 animal (the mini turbine and cleaning kit too) and has the beltless power system, which is great. The ball is a little tougher to push around than I thought it would be, but I think that may just be me not being used to the handling of it yet. It does manuever much differently than any other vacuum I have ever used, and has a much easier time cleaning baseboards and under the edge of my furniture than anything else I have tried. The only thing I am not crazy about is that when the cannister gets full, I use the red "dump" switch which opens the bottom of the cannister and is supposed to dump all of the junk out into your trash can hands-free. Mine tends to get so congested with cycloned-cat fur that I have to reach in and pull the giant donut-shaped fur ball out from around the center of the cannister with my hands, therfore making the disposal not hands free. But this could be just due to the fact that the old Eureka didn't pick anything up and the poor Dyson is doing all the work! Even if its not, this is a minor inconvienece and a small price to pay for my carpet looking and feeling amazing!

If you're on the fence about buying this machine I heartily suggest that you buy it or go to your nearest retailer (Target, Sears, Bed Bath & Beyond, etc.) and try it out. I love mine! I can't wait to drag it over to my Dad's house and try it on his carpets (he has a 3 cat household as well). I truly believe that it will exceed all expectations and have you loving your floors again!

5.0 out of 5 stars All positive reviews are TRUE!, November 26, 2005

(VINE VOICE)
(...) At first I was concerned about the plastic material and that some reviewers said that additonal attachments would not fit. Well the "plastic" is a special durable type and the "other attachments" now come with 2 adapters to fit all Dyson models. It really is easy to use and picks up embarrassing amounts of dirt! This model is cost effective over the plain DC15 since it includes the carpet kit, low floor tool, and mini turbine specifically made for this model. I think it will last a long time and is a very good value.
