I'm a long time Oreck XL user. I saw the deal for a refurb on passwird.com, so I grabbed one. I can't believe the volume of dirt this thing pulled out of my carpets after they had been cleaned with the Oreck. It is heavier than the Oreck, but the complaints that it's "too heavy" are exaggerated. I also have had no trouble using the attachments. The trick is to completely extend the flexible hose one time. This keeps it from wanting to drag the base unit after you. The overall industrial design is great although I find the placement of the power button a little quirky. Small price to pay. I'd buy it again.

After my mom purchased a Dyson Animal new last year, I fell in love with it and really wanted one for myself. She paid extra to get the attachments (like the upholstery tool and such) and those extra tools were a waste! They are cumbersome and truely useless. However, the vacume itself is wonderfull. So this Dyson DC 14 Yellow is the exact same machine as the Dyson Animal (purple) but without all the fancy attachments that honestly, no one needs. This reconditioned Dyson works just as well as my mom's new one, and is in perfect condition. The suction is seriously powerfull and everytime we vacume, we like to look in the canister and see what all it picked up. The machine works great on carpet and tile (by turning off the brush) and the wand is long and easy to use, and the canister is very easy to empty (but I recommend you do it outside or out of the way because it is a little dusty). The main reasons why I did not give it 5 stars is this: 1)You cannot use the machine itself on large area rugs that are very thick and have a backing on them - the machine can't get enough air flow through it and it makes a horrible noise (luckily, I dont' have a rug, but my mom does and she has to use the wand to vacume it). 2)When using the wand while the machine is sitting on hard surfaces (ie wood floors, tile) the suction is so powerfull that as you try to pull the wand to reach corners and such, the machine 'follows' you by rolling. On carpet, this is not a problem. But, I would still not give up this machine! I think I read a review once for a Dyson where someone complained that the canister filled up too soon (after one room they explained). Ok, hello, that means you have a seriously DIRTY carpet!! If it fills up too quickly, then it has picked up tons of dirt so the vacume did it's job. So overall, I highly recommend this vacume for all surfaces, and without all the crazy large attachments that cost extra. Trust me, you won't use them once you see how hard they are to use.

Life-transforming!,

I never thought I would be tempted to wax lyrical about a household appliance, but this vacuum cleaner lives up to the hype 100%. I have velvet sofas that were embedded with dog hair. nothing could get the hair off them or out of the corners of my apartment. one going over with the stair attachment and my furniture is hair and dust free! the suction on this baby is so stong, it also removed dust from mouldings along the walls. Again using the stairs attachement, i was able to vaccum my mattress and the top of 2 armoires instead of swiffering while standing on a step ladder.
the design is incredibly user-friendly. i am not a particularly strong person and find the Dyson easy to move around and lift. the hose is built into the upright, so there is no awkward attaching and detaching of parts -- just press a button and the hose pulls off the main unit, and telescopes several feet out. other plusses are that the electrical cord is quite long and the canister is a breeze to empty. just make sure that anything you don't want vacuumed up is off the floor -- this vacuum tried to swallow a metal curtain rod that was lying beneath my computer cart! If you have pets or dust prblems, this vaccum cleaner will change your life. I looooove my Dyson!

It's not that heavy! It's a Dyson!,

After a friend bought one, my wife and I just had to have a Dyson. The dirt it pulled from her rugs (and ours! We borrowed our friend's machine for a few weeks) was simply amazing... not to mention disgusting.
I just bought a reconditioned Dyson from Amazon and what a deal! At first we purchased the 07 model from a housewares store for about $350 with a discount and after tax. Not too bad. However, after checking out Amazon's price for a recon 14 model, we bought it on the spot and returned the previous about 30 minutes later. After Amazon's discounts, the price was very, very compelling. Ok, so the price is good, but how does it work? Great! It certainly sucks, which I say most dysphemistically. It is infinitely more quiet than the $50 Hoover I had previously. It's so quiet, it doesn't scare the dog. It picks up practically everything. The tools don't fall off if you look at them strangely and the hose extends quite easily to the top of my stairs. The only drawback - and this is industry wide - is the dirt release system. Every bagless vacuum has this problem. Don't get me wrong. The Dyson's works well. You easily remove the dirt cup from the machine, walk it over to a garbage receptacle and pull the trigger. The bottom opens and out comes the dirt. No matter how you slice it, however, unless you go outside, dust will sneak out of your bag. Bagless vacs are cool, but no one has mastered how to get rid of the dirt without getting a significant poof of dust in the face. My solution: Take the dirt cup and a bag outside. Mission accomplished. In all, the Dyson is expensive, but the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks. My wife and I - both allergy sufferers - have noticed a significant increase in the quality of our air. There just isn't as much dust floating around the house. We breathe better and don't have as many sneezing fits. If you can get it reconditioned, go for it. I've bought many items from many places reconditioned and they've all done quite well.

Best Value for Money!,

My wife and I bought a Dyson a month after our marriage and at first were skeptical because of the claims and the slightly high price! We moved to our new place a month later and as a test she vacummed using the old Hoover bag vacuum. Next, I used the Dyson and could not believe the amount of dirt that was pulled out of the carpet?! I remember having to empty the container at least 3 times (and this was just one room?)
The vacuum was a bit quirky to use at first but, after you get used to it, is not a problem. Ok, it is a bit heavy, but it's not like the Hoover with the heavy motor. The other thing to remember is to rinse the HEPA filter 2x the year. This is a breeze, and the sucker keeps on taking in the dirt and abuse. We love it

Couldn't be happier,

I felt obliged to add my two cents after reading the 2-star review from January 16, 2006. That reviewer felt that this vacuum was too heavy, disassembly was required for hardwood floors, and the flex tube was poorly designed.
My other vac is a 10-year-old Eureka, which is much heavier and far louder than the Dyson. The Dyson is neither heavy nor bulky, and I was quite surprised at how little noise it made compared to my older vacuum. The big plastic head is just as large as my Eureka, and of course will not go under a couch. If I want to vacuum under my couch or bed I'll use the attachments. I did not buy an accessory head to do hardwood. The vacuum has a carpet/bare floors switch, which merely turns the spinning brush on and off. I have hardwood floors with a few area rugs, and I only vacuum these rooms once - on the bare floors setting. The vacuum picks up just fine on my rugs. However my bedrooms have nice thick carpeting, and I switch to the carpet setting for these rooms. It's really quite simple. As for the extender and the flex tube, I read the instructions and was able to use the flex tube and attachments without any problems. I find that the flex tube is simple to use, and the vacuum stays in place when I am using the attachments. Attachments can be connected to the straight extender piece which is about three feet long, or directly to the flex tube. I like having both options. The vacuum will chase me around when I try to overreach with the flex tube, but isn't that the point? I never considered this a design flaw. When I first got this vacuum I cleaned the bedrooms first with my old vacuum, then I went back over the floor with the Dyson, and was surprised at how much fine dust ended up in the cannister. Another nice plus is the cord is much longer than my other vacuum. I don't have any pets, so I can't comment on pet hair. I love the idea of cannister vacuums in general, I'm very happy I don't need to buy vacuum bags any more. I always made a mess changing the bag on my Eureka. I debated between the Dyson and the bagless Bissell, but once I found the remanufactured Dyson, I felt the price couldn't be beat.

I'm an smart-alec engineer and I am usually very critical of product design, but I am THRILLED with this vacuum.
I was able to get this unit for just over $300 after free shipping and extra "August" discount and it absolutely blows the doors off my $300 Hoover Windtunnel which more or less crapped out after 3 years of moderate use due to brittle plastics used on several crucial parts. The Dyson is lighter, much quieter, took all of 15 seconds to assemble, appears to perform every bit as well re: dirt/dust removal and carpet grooming, and includes complete instructions on how to track down clogs and service the vacuum yourself. The built-on edge brush does a steller job of scooping dust out of the carpet crevices, and emptying this thing is quick, easy, and -much- less disgusting than with the Hoover. I sympathize with those that complain about not being able to push the edge of the vacuum under kitchen cabinets, but I feel using the brush attachment will do a much better job of cleaning those areas anyway. I -was- able to vacuum my whole set of stairs despite the stiffness of the flexible hose. I highly recommend the reconditioned unit for those who want a truly excellent product at a reasonable price.

I LOVE THIS VACUUM!!!,

Let me start by saying that I love to vacuum. I can't stand the thought of a dirty floor so I vacuum at least every other day. I bought this remanufactured Dyson DC 14 on February 17, 2006. I have 3 kids (4 if you count my husband), 2 dogs and a cat in the house. If this vaccum can clean my carpet this well, it should work for anyone! It was a tremendous bargain buying remanufactured. I have not found one scratch on it and have had absolutely no problems whatsoever! As for the vacuum performance, it is the best vacuum I have ever owned. This includes 2 Sears Kenmores, 1 Singer, and a Hoover Windtunnel. The suction on the Dyson DC 14 is awesome. I couldn't believe all the fine dust and hair it pulled out of my carpet. Apparently, our previous vacuum (Sears Kenmore bagless, upright) hadn't been picking up a thing. I find the attachments very easy to use. The telescoping wand is easy to pull out so I'm not quite sure what the other users are talking about when they say it's hard to use. After I figured it out the first time, it's a snap to use. The vacuum hasn't tipped over yet when I am stretching the wand to get along the baseboard and ceilings. I do not consider the vacuum heavy, at least no more so than my previous "pieces of junk". It glides along so smooth that there is hardly an effort to use it. The canister is super easy to empty and snap back into place. You never have to touch a piece of dust and dirt. I honestly can not think of one thing negative to say about this vacuum. I will never own anything other than a Dyson!!!

do not go for factory-reconditioned DC-14s,

In my past experience buying refurbished products, they're usually as good as new. Not in this case. The first DC14 I received came in damaged, with a very important clip broken and leaving the vacuum cover loose. Amazon replaced it in a couple weeks (i had to pay out of my own pocket to send the defective one back to amazon), but the 2nd one is worse. It is clearly used, scratches all over the plastic surface, accessories clips are broken out of the box, and the air coming out of the vacuum smelled funky... no suprise it's going back again. I don't know what else to say about this vacuum, but Dyson's factory reconditioning process should be called factory re-packing. Save yourself trouble and get a new one.

When I bought this machine after haveing to by a new vacuum every year for the past 3 years I was afraid it was all just hype. Amazon shipped it in two days and I was off and running. It is easy to use, not at all noisy, made my rugs look new and picked up everything on my hard wood. Easy to set up and get moving. I would highly, highly reccomend. My 'reconditioned' vacuum came like new with no indication that it was not completely new.
