This review is from: Factory-Reconditioned KitchenAid RKT2651XWW Epicurean 475-Watt 6-Quart Stand Mixer, White (Kitchen)
After destroying the gears in several cheaper stand mixers, I decided to look around and find a really good one that would "stand" up to what I cook! After some serious surfing on the net, I quickly realized that the only way to go was Kitchen-Aid. I then looked at each of the models and settled on this one for several reasons.

As I already stated, I have stripped the gears in my old mixers many times. This was usually because the gears were nylon. All of the smaller capacity models of this particular mixer have nylon gears. The gears in this model are metal. As are the gears in the model that is a step up from this and referred to as "commercial."

My next requirement was capacity. 6 quarts may sound like a lot, but if you bake something as simple as a double batch of cookies, you will find any thing smaller is just not suitable.

My only hesitation at buying the Epicurean was the cost. Brand new these puppies run over $350. Wow. I love to cook, but I am not rich! Then I found that Amazon sells these refurbished units. I have bought quite a few things from Amazon and have learned about the reliable Kitchen-Aid name. So, I figured I would give it a shot. I was not disappointed. This machine performs like a dream.

Know that when you buy the refurbished unit, you don't get the pouring shield. I didn't care when I bought it and frankly I haven't missed it. I did find out that Kitchen-Aid does NOT give the standard 1 year replacement warranty with these refurbished units. The warranty is 6 months. Amazon will let you return the units within 30 days.

If you are wondering as to the condition of my machine when it arrived, it was like new. There was a small rub mark on the back of the mixing bowl. My guess is the unit was returned because whoever bought it didn't understand how to adjust the height of the bowl. (Be sure to read this carefully in the manual. Make sure too you snap the bowl in the clip at the back and not just into the pegs. This is very important to ensure your beater doesn't jam.)

So, what is my final word on this machine? While I grant you the cost is still not cheap, when you combine it with Amazon's fair return policy and the Kitchen-Aid replacement guarantee, it's worth it. I have thrown some tough curves at this mixer and it has "stood" up to them every time. I highly recommend this machine. (The Empire Red color is just gorgeous!) I also encourage you to buy an extra bowl. They are a bit pricey, but well worth it! Happy Mixing!!

5.0 out of 5 stars My Mom's Helper, January 29, 2002

My Mom is 85 and is beginning to have problems baking for a crowd, with arthritis and all. Got her one of these and it did the trick. Worked like a dream right out of the box. I helped her with the first batch of cookies and a bread. Now, there is no stopping her. She bakes three times a week and wonders why Dad didn't get her one many years ago. Such a workhorse for such a reasonable price, plus it made me a hero!

5.0 out of 5 stars It may not make you a great cook ..................., June 27, 2003

You'll be inspired to attempt great feats of cookery with this machine in your kitchen. Like having a Mercedes in your driveway, people will expect more from you than the average person.

After many, many years of using the old (50 years +) reliable Sunbeam, that my grandmother bought when my mother was young, I finally had the courage to break from tradition, and get a mixer that could handle a recipe that called for more than 3 cups of flour. This baby will take up to 12 cups of flour (or 8 cups of whole wheat flour), and never groan or squeal. Cake mixes whip up in nothing flat, and I've never been able to make merangue as quickly or as stiff as I can with my new Epicurean Mixer.

Here's a hint. Make sure to read the instruction manual, and pay careful attention to the part about adjusting the bowl height. A quarter turn of the little adjusting screw is all it takes. Also, and I found this out the hard way, the metal clip on the back of the bowl support has to snap securely into place, otherwise you'll never get the bowl adjusted properly.

Complaints? Well, the first one is that I waited so long to do something about buying a good mixer. The other complaint is that this monster doesn't fit under my kitchen cabinets without a little twisting and tilting. Once it's in your kitchen, you'll find a way to live with it, and then you'll wonder how you ever did without it.

I received this mixer in perfect condition - impossible to tell that it was reconditioned. Extremely good quality and it still performs as well as when I bought it 3 or 4 years ago! I don't expect that I'll need to buy another mixer for many years to come.

After using a Sunbeam stand mixer most of my life, it finally cratered. So, this year I have treated myself with this mixer, and it is wonderful.
