Many gadgets for the kitchen are less than essential. Some are pretty foolish. But the Showtime Indoor Rotisserie & BBQ from Ronco is a machine that our family uses, I would guess, about three times a week. Not only does it do a real job, it performs tasks that we can't otherwise accomplish in our kitchen. For example, a bread machine is a convenience, but not essential for baking a loaf of bread. The rotisserie grill, however, turns out food that I could not produce any other way.

Although we've mostly done chickens, we have also cooked chicken pieces, bratwurst, beef roasts, pork roasts and a leg of lamb. We successfuly roasted a 13 lb turkey. We even cooked frozen salmon filets in the basket after a quick basting with herbed mayonnaise and it came out delicious.

The food quality is, simply put, fantastic. The whole chickens are far superior to even the most conscientiously roasted poultry. The dark meat is tender and fully cooked, the white meat moist and savory, and the seasoned, crisped skin is a nutritionist's worst nightmare. A cheap, rather fatty pork shoulder roast came out with much of the fat rendered away and an even doneness that made for delicious eating.

Speaking of fat, Ron Popiel markets this machine on his informercials as causing the "fat to run off," thereby delivering some kind of health advantage. Well, the fat does drip continuously, but the poultry and meats cooked in the rotisserie are plenty greasy. Please be aware that this is certainly part of the reason the chicken is so good! I don't think there is any more or less fat in a rotisseried chicken than in a roast bird.

If you don't want to use the skewers or rods, you can cook foods in an adjustable basket. For example, we put in several bratwurst, set the top of basket down so that the links are tightly in place, set the timer for 20 minutes, and come back to sausages that are fully cooked, lighly crisped on the skin, and bursting with juices.

I really like the engineering on this machine. The controls are very simple. The setup is uncomplicated and intuitive. You have only one heat setting, and adjust the time to control doneness. A single timer dial works both to set time and turn the machine on and off. In an age where a TV remote comes with four dozen buttons, this kind of plain, understable usability is, I think, a real blessing.

I bought the reconditioned model from Amazon and haven't had any trouble so far. Hey, if a machine comes out of the factory with a defect (and some are going to), why not get one that has been diagnosed and repaired? At the price savings it's really hard to go wrong. I'd recommend the Showtime Rotisserie to anyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Set it, but *DON'T* forget it!, March 7, 2001

I'll admit - I haven't had as much fun with a kitchen appliance since I was eight and got an easy bake oven! The Showtime really is about showmanship: wonderful aromas in your kitchen and meat dripping tantalizingly as it rotates.

While this unit is working, I won't be buying supermarket rotisserie chicken again! For 1/3 the price, I can have a bigger chicken, that hasn't been sitting under hot lamps waiting for purchase, nor getting soggy skinned in the bag on the way home.

On the minus side, ******do NOT***** take Ron Popeil's informercial "literally". "Set it and forget it"? You are going to want to watch the oven while it's roasting, because an improperly skewered or improperly balanced load could result in smoke or fire...or if what's cooking has a lot of grease, it could conceivably overfill the drip tray and spill out of the oven bottom...consider it an appliance due attention and respect, just like a deep fryer or a waffle iron.

As for taking up a tiny footprint in your kitchen: well...the Showtime covers a small area, being about 10X14X14, but as a practical matter, you need considerably more space. The literature says not to put it under a low cabinet! (It needs 8" clearance on top and around sides/back to avoid possible heat damage or fire to your surroundings!) And you probably want to have about a foot of free countertop in front of it, as well. The tempered glass door slides under it neatly enough, but when it's time to pull your entree out, it's going to be dripping those lovely juices all over your floor, unless you've got a plate right up to the unit to drop your meal onto. For our tiny kitchen, the solution is to use my rolling cart's cutting board surface, after I've done my other dinner prep - that way, I can keep the Showtime well away from heat-damageable stuff.

Note that this unit appears to be disappearing in favor of a newer model with a digital display. "Big deal" ...but the fact that this is the older model is something to keep in mind when doing a price comparison.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Product ... Easy to Use ... Easy to Clean, April 18, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Factory-Reconditioned Ronco Inventions ST4000R Showtime Indoor Rotisserie and Barbecue (Kitchen)
Bought a reconditioned model ... and cooked my first chicken the same night it arrived ... rounded a 4 1/2 LB chicken up to 5 lbs and set the timer for 1 Hour 15 minutes .... I'm a pretty decent cook and I have NEVER made a chiken this good .... very succulent and it came off the spit at EXACTLY 175 degrees.

There was a little more clean up ... you have to wash the glass front , the spits, the grease catcher and the reflective shield but all of these parts come out easily ... and only took a few minutes longer than normal clean up.

I bought this rotisserir for day to day cooking ... of small things ... and would give it 6 stars if i could ... havent tried it for real large birds or roasts but since i rarely ever cook those meals its not an issue ...

Well, I wanted this Ronco rotisserie that day I saw it on TV... But I never buy anything from HSN or any other shopping channels. I was watching birds rotating on the screen, drooling over those ribs... I didn't buy it because I felt it is too much money for something I can't see or touch. Then, I saw this same rotisserie on Amazon.com. What a deal! I bought reconditioned model and it came in perfect condition and I love it! Food comes out perfect every time. So far I made 6-pound chicken,

chicken and pork kebobs, salmon fillets, shrimp screwers. You cannot beat this price for such great product. Thanks Ron! I hope you will fix your Customer Service department like you reconditionned my rotisserie.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Appliance, September 16, 2001
By
Robert Long (Seattle, WA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Factory-Reconditioned Ronco Inventions ST4000R Showtime Indoor Rotisserie and Barbecue (Kitchen)
Purchased the Ronco unit from Amazon after a couple late night informercials 'primed the pump'. Absolutely no problems with my reconditioned machine - arrived as advertised - in perfect condition.

I've had the machine for six months now & still use it frequently. My favorites? Pork loin roast & roast chicken. My local Costco sells a pre-marinated pork loin that rotisseries perfectly. Sliced thick, my now-famous roast pork has been the favourite of many events this summer.

Chicken: No marinade is needed; simply salt & pepper (or season with your favourite rub), skewer on the rotisserie wheel, set and forget. Chicken is cooked to perfection, tender & truly falls off the bone.

Finally, I'd suggest trying the following:

Halve and boil red potatoes - cooking until tender. Drain and place potatoes in the wire basket. Brush with butter & sprinkle with salt and pepper (I add a little cayenne and minced garlic to the butter to 'kick it up a notch'). Rotisserie until browned & serve hot. Scrumptious.

I sincerely hope you find as much enjoyment from your machine as I have.

3.0 out of 5 stars Misleading advertising and horrible customer service, April 11, 2001
By
Gail (Brooklyn, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Factory-Reconditioned Ronco Inventions ST4000R Showtime Indoor Rotisserie and Barbecue (Kitchen)
Although the food cooked in this rotisserie (I bought one new but wanted to share my experiences with you) is flavorful and succulent, anyone who purchases a product should be prepared for extremely poor and occasionally rude customer. Be prepared on multiple occasions to be put on hold for a long time and then hung up on before you even hear the sound of a live human voice. After this kind of treatment and waiting more than a month for a response to my letter, I attempted to get a customer service representative to refer me to a supervisor. Her response was she would not refer me to a supervisor because all the supervisors were gone for the evening and besides they would give me the same response as she would. (Perhaps but I doubt that he or she would have screamed at a customer who had not raised his or her voice or had made every effort to be polite.)

As for the promotional nonsense about being able to "set it and forget it" as another reviewer mentioned, that could be a dangerous practice: I had a small grease fire in the rotisserie and had thankfully read all the disclaimers which come with the machine warning that one should not leave the machine unattended while on. I had a different rotisserie (which cooked 2.5 time slower and rotated vertically) which did not require such close monitoring because of the configuration of the cooking elements.

The only other criticism I have is that it is not quite as easy to find the proper placement for poultry on the spitrods as you might expect. You really have to make certain the spitrods go through the center of chicken and turkey.

In short: a very good product but a very unreliable company.

It's ok. It cooks fine but you must never leave it out of sight as grease fires can occur easily. Smells of cooking food fill the house...nice at first but difficult to get rid of later (just try salmon for example). Customer service is non-existent. You'll wait hours on hold, and get no response off their web site. Still all in all, it is a useful rotisserie device. It makes chicken, prime rib well and the fat really does get collected separately. Roast come out great. Tip: try to cook with it outside, away from your house about 5 feet. Add 30 minutes more if it is cold out. But you will avoid the smell and fire if the greases catches fire. It is a good way of freeing up the oven at holidays. Probably, the biggest model is great for cooking your turkey and leaving your oven for pies, etc. during Thanksgiving. Shop around for better prices...always use meat thermometer to judge doneness

5.0 out of 5 stars Serious cooks snicker all you want, this thing works, July 6, 2001
This review is from: Factory-Reconditioned Ronco Inventions ST4000R Showtime Indoor Rotisserie and Barbecue (Kitchen)
I love to cook and frequently have friends over for multi course dinner parties. When my friends see the Ronco Rotisserie in my closet, they laugh and assume I was given it as a joke.

But this device is no joke. It is an incredibly well designed device that provides excellent results. I have tried roasting chickens upright, I have tried turning them in a V rack every half hour and I tried a clay pot and nothing provides results like this machine. This machine provides consistent, delicious results.

And in the spirit of excellent value, Ronco provides all the accessories that you could ever need. The skewers help you make perfect sates, kebabs or large vegetables. The basket works with both fish or vegatables. The flavour injector was a nice extra that I wouldn't have purchased but like using. Ronco really works to make sure that you will use their product over and over.

And if this wasn't enough, almost every piece is dish washer safe!!!

The only additional investment you will need is a ball of butchers twine. The birds need to be trussed before being cooked and the little elastics provided with the machine are not strong enough for large birds (7 lb chicken or 12 lb turkey).

This unit moves well beyond the realms of the trailer park gourmet. Don't be put off by the late night infomercials, it is an excellent value that produces great results.
