This review is from: Factory-Reconditioned Ryobi ZRP230 One+ Impact Driver (Bare Tool) (Tools & Home Improvement)
I originally purchased the driver to sink 3in wood screws into the door frame when installing a striker plate. Anyone who has tried to drive a screw with a drill knows the pleasure of the bit jumping and stripping the screw. This tool sent those screws home with absolutely no problem. You do have to be aware of over-torque. Impact drivers will drive a screw or bolt into next week if you're not careful. I took this tool with me on a furniture installation job. We had to build beds for 14 dorm rooms. I had my Ryobi, my partner used his DeWalt. The Ryobi performed very well however, it ran out of juice long before the DeWalt. The good news is the Ryobi fully recharged in about 30min, whereas my buddy told me it takes his DeWalt 2hrs to re-up. If you are using this tool for an occasional weekend project, I highly recommend, but if you're looking for a strong performer with power to burn...like most things in life, spend the extra $$$. Hope this helps.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impact Driving is SO much better!, February 12, 2008
By
I bought this driver a few weeks ago and have only used it a few times (maybe an hour), but I'm incredibly impressed so far. I'm a wannabe/DIY guy that just came off a older dead DeWalt drill. And I've been seeing DeWalt and Makita impact drivers on home improvement TV shows for quite some time now and thought it'd be a "neat" thing - but it's so much more than that. For driving screws this is hands down a superior way to a standard corded or cordless drill. It can drive screws like nobody's business! It doesn't have a clutch like a typical drill, so it's not for finesse work, but the variable speed trigger make the clutch unnecessary in all of the cases I've come across so far.

One reviewer mentioned that you can not use this to drill holes, but I've found that to be untrue. I used a hex shank twist drill bit in this driver and went straight through light gauge metal than through old hard 2x4 wood without any hesitation. Sure, it doesn't have a typical chuck so you can't just use any drill bit, but it works great for me.

My only complaints are minor and pale in comparison to how happy I am with the driver: the LED light is handy, but it varies in brightness with how hard you pull the trigger - so lightly starting a screw into a delicate surface gives you almost no light. Other drivers leave the light on after you use it also, which I'd love to see on this driver. And the even more minor complaint is that the "chuck" comes from the factory with a bit of grease or something on it that continues to come off on my fingers when changing bits. Very minor, and I'm sure it's to protect the metal from corrosion.

Even though I haven't had any experience with the Ryobi brand, this tool feels like it will hold up nicely compared to the usual suspects. If not, I can buy another one and still have spent less that buying one of the yellow or black/blue brands :)

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic - 10 times better than a drill, December 30, 2007
i was initially skeptical/reluctant to buy an impact driver at first, but it came free with a combo-pack purchase, so figured i'd take a chance.
this really is sensational - it is 10 times better and easier at driving screws than a similar cordless drill, and has so much torque it will outperform most medium duty corded drills too. driving 4" screws into seasoned hardwood is not a problem!
it is lighter and more compact than a similar drill, so better for awkward spaces. it has an LED which comes on when you press the trigger, which is surprisingly useful (especially in dark corners).
my only complaint is a small one: i wish it had a magnetic plate on the bottom of the handle (like some of ryobi's drills) to hold extra screws.
i have been using this consistently for over three years now (at least a couple of hours per week), and performance is still as it was when new. it has withstood numerous good drops, and battery power/life has not waned.
(in case you don't know, this is used only for driving screws/bolts - it cannot be used for drilling.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Strong performer at a bargain price, January 18, 2008
By
I am a handyman and tool collector but did not have an impact driver. I always used a cordless drill for driving screws. I had a small remodel that included hanging sheetrock, and I knew I needed an impact driver to fasten rock to old tough dry studs. After reading reviews and shopping prices, I bought a Ryobi...not my first choice in tools but it looked good for the price. I worked side-by-side with a contractor that was using a DeWalt driver, and the Ryobi performed as well as the DeWalt. It never failed to sink screws up to 4". Battery life is excellent and performance is outstanding. It has good feel and balance and the LED light is a plus. How long it lives remains to be seen.

This review is from: Factory-Reconditioned Ryobi ZRP230 One+ Impact Driver (Bare Tool) (Tools & Home Improvement)
Was just browsing the Ryobi pages when I noticed the price of some of the reconditioned tools being sold by Amazon Marketplace Sellers. The price of this one really caught my eye becuz a NEW Ryobi impact driver sans battery and charger sells at Home Depot for $15 LESS (I've heard that HD owns a big chunk of Ryobi - or is it vice versa? - which is why they're the only hardware chain that carries Ryobi products). And, this is the case with a couple other reconditioned Ryobi tools listed here, so check the prices on the HD website B4 you take the plunge here.

As for the driver (I bought it new), it works extremely well FOR ITS PRICE. Indeed, its 1200 in-lbs of torque is 3 to 3 1/2 times that of the blue Ryobi drill/driver (depending on the model/year). I also like the fact that it isn't as long as "typical" drill/drivers and can, therefore, get into tight spaces easier, while at the same time being MUCH more powerful than "compact" drivers.

I've been using this quite a bit since I got it and it works great. There were some scuff marks on the driver (as noted) but that doesn't affect its performance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beware Reconditioned Tools, December 9, 2011

This review is from: Factory-Reconditioned Ryobi ZRP230 One+ Impact Driver (Bare Tool) (Tools & Home Improvement)
I have a large collection of Ryobi One+ tools and love them all. I've never had a problem with any of them other than replacing my original batteries after a number of years. I received this drill for a birthday gift in Oct 11. I didn't have a reason to use it for just over a month. On first use I was amazed at how easily this thing drove large screws through sheet rock and into studs without a pilot hole and with zero damage to the screw head. It became my new go-to tool for medium to large tasks. So the forthcoming negative comments are not toward the drill but buying refurbished! During my first few projects I pulled the trigger once and nothing happened. I switched it to reverse & it worked fine; back to forward, nothing. I messed with it a little and it worked again but then quit again. I eventually realized I had an intermittent contact in the forwards/reverse switch and could make it work on demand by wiggling the switch while pulling the trigger. I immediately got onto Amazon and attempted to return it but it was over 30 days so it was too late... lesson learned, give the tools a test run as soon as I get them. It is covered by warranty so I will be sending it to a repair shop about an hour away and they'll fix it but I also decided at that moment that the few bucks my wife saved buying reconditioned (sometimes they're not even cheaper). I had another bad experience with another reconditioned tool (speed saw) that my wife bought at the same time. It was missing the 1/8" collet (holds the blade bit) and it cost me $2 + $13 shipping to get a new one because I didn't notice in the first 30 days (see lesson learned earlier). I immediately changed all my Ryobi One+ items in my Amazon wish list to new tools liked to Home Depot. I might still get a bum tool but at least they won't be missing parts.

3.0 out of 5 stars should have bought new, October 26, 2011

This review is from: Factory-Reconditioned Ryobi ZRP230 One+ Impact Driver (Bare Tool) (Tools & Home Improvement)
Not worth it. For an extra $20 byuy the new one. The clutch isn't right so it still spins after you release the trigger. Not a big deal but is annoying and it feels like the driver won't last very long.

So far, this reconditioned impact driver has been used with woodscrews and with masonary bit. Works great, reasonable price for amature home repair enthusiasts.
