5.0 out of 5 stars Better than I expected. August 13, 2011

I popped a LiOn battery into these clippers right out of the box and went to the bushes. The clippers worked even better than I expect them to. I didn't have a full charge on the battery but I still got six square hedges and a couple of shrubs trimmed up nicely. I even had battery enough to trim back some general new growth in the backyard along the tree line. If the stem will fit in the teeth of the bar then this baby will cut it right off. The manual says it's a 3/8" opening which seems about right. The manual gives guidance on lubrication and where to sharpen the blades with a chainsaw file.

Overall I'm impressed with the product but I've never had a Ryobe 18+ tool give me a moment's problem yet.

2.0 out of 5 stars Underpowered March 26, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
Tired of hauling around 100 + feet of electrical cord to trim bushes, we gave our WeedEater Trimmer to our parent's and ordered this Ryobi 18 volt. It worked okay for very light trimming of leaves and mini-twigs, but when we tried to use it this Spring for simple elephant grasses, it failed completely. It did not have the power to cut the stalks and jammed up continually. We are now considering a gas powered trimmer as an alternative. Unless you are only sculpting new growth on small bushes, I cannot recommend this unit.

2.0 out of 5 stars hedge trimmer November 8, 2012

These are very easy to do, grab them and go. Don't think they even cut 1/4 inch twigs though. I have some hummingbird flowers that are a little bit woody and they don't cut them. Forget cutting juniper bushes, just won't do it. Sucks battery power like a mad man. You know the saying, if it is too good to be true, probably is, these prove that point. Avoid and buy a corded cheap trimmer, you will be much better off.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beast! September 12, 2012

I dont know what these others are talkin about when it comes to power, if it fits between the blades, it gets cut off. What more could you ask for, besides cordless.... O wait. It is.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ryobi trimmers get the job done March 29, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
I ordered these (sold as refurbished, could not find them new anywhere, I think they may be discontinued) and they came quick from amazon. I used the ryobi one+ batteries and they work great. they are lightweight and powerful. I thought they would drain the battery fast but they did not, I did 6 bushes on one charge. I am in NC and our bushes grow almost year round and require constant maintenance to keep them looking nice. These are not for cutting branches and the blade will stick if you try to cut something thicker than 1/4 inch or so. But for typical, regular trimming (like new spring growth, or mid summer growth etc.) these are the tool. I would recommend this trimmer. They cut fast and are well balanced so you don't get tired easily. The lithium 18v (grey/black) batteries are smaller than regular ryobi 18v (black/yellow) and seem to perform much better.
I wanted the ryobi brand because they also offer a hand-vac (bought it at home depot) that runs on the same batteries. We use the hand-vac around the house and garage and it is also really powerful and runs for ever on an 18v one+ battery. So its just really convenient to have one set of batteries that can be used across a variety of tools. Ryobi is pretty good quality and reasonably priced. Maybe not the top end, but sufficient for most DOIY.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ryobi hedge trimmer October 30, 2011

This hedge trimmer is just what the doctor ordered. I have two other Ryobi tools so I didn't need another battery and saved a bunch. I only have a small hedge to trim there is no problem in getting the job done quickly. It is also nice not to have to drag 100 feet of extension cord around too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful enough for small/medium jobs November 1, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
We bought this after our old trimmer died after many years of use. It works well with the boxwoods and other small to medium-sized shrubs in our yard. If we tried it with larger jobs it may not be able to handle it, but we don't have anything like that, anyway. It was fine for basic use in our yard.

2.0 out of 5 stars Underpowered, poorly designed, cheaply built August 23, 2012
By Mike
This trimmer had difficulty cutting twigs the size of a matchstick. Items that size and smaller constantly jammed the blade. When I pulled on the trimmer to free the jam, the front handle shattered. When I tried to order a replacement part, I was informed the part was on back order with no ETA. In other words, the trimmer could not be repaired. Battery powered trimmers are convenient. This model was poorly designed and cheaply manufactured. In order to avoid similar problems, look for a more powerful, better made model.
