5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Mid-Range Sewing Machine
The Singer 5050 provides an excellent mid-range sewing machine at a low-end price.

Although not automatically threading like many top-of-the-line machines, the 5050 is incredibly easy to thread--moreso than even the underpowered little handheld stitchers advertised on TV. The thread tension and stitch widths are easily adjustable, providing for accurate, strong seams...

The Singer 5050 provides an excellent mid-range sewing machine at a low-end price.

Although not automatically threading like many top-of-the-line machines, the 5050 is incredibly easy to thread--moreso than even the underpowered little handheld stitchers advertised on TV. The thread tension and stitch widths are easily adjustable, providing for accurate, strong seams that don't snag or snap the thread during sewing.

The 5050 includes 50 different stitch functions (made from 32 stitches), can do 4-step buttonholes with ease, and can be used to do darning, embroidery, and all manner of decorative stitches.

Accessories included are a second pattern module (for an alternate 25 stitch functions), zipper, button, blindstitch, and special-purpose presser feet, an assortment of needles, a friction-free plate for embroidery, and spare bobbins. The feet simply snap on and off for quick changes.

The machine also can do free-arm sewing for easy cuff and hem finishes, is controlled electronically via a foot switch for excellent speed control, and is all-around one of the most excellent machines in its price range.

3.0 out of 5 stars no frills, November 1, 2004
This review is from: Factory-Reconditioned SINGER 5050 50-Stitch-Function Sewing Machine (Kitchen)
The machine as such is good.. that is if you are not looking for any frills in your machine.
Unfortunately I had a few problems with my machine and had to return it. The main problem was with the sideways movement of the needle. The needle would get stuck to the left, resulting in a straight stitch (irrespective of the pattern selected). In all probability, I just received a defective piece and others may not experience the same problem.

1.0 out of 5 stars Falls far short of expectations, August 4, 2005
This review is from: Factory-Reconditioned SINGER 5050 50-Stitch-Function Sewing Machine (Kitchen)
I've been a seamstress for 40 years but I cannot get this machine to do anything but sew straight stitches, no matter how many times I read the instructions. I guess it was not a reconditioning it got at the factory. Now I have to figure out what to do about it.

This was a monster of a machine. It was difficult to thread and would bunch thread coming up from the bobbin. I'm pretty mechanically inclined and just could not solve the problem.

I eventually replaced with a low end Brother machine and have been happily sewing ever since.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid machine, October 10, 2007

This is a great machine. While my daughter loves the different stitches available, I don't use them very much.
Normally I am not much of a seamstress because I have experienced difficulties in getting the tension adjusted on the machines I have used in the past (resulting in much cussing and time consuming thread removal).

A short while after we purchased this machine, it had to be packed up and put into storage because we were in the process of selling our house. After we moved, I pulled it out of storage and set it up for use. From my past sewing machine experiences, I was expecting the tension to be way out of whack and planned to spend some time battling with the machine to get it adjusted.

To my complete amazement, it was perfect... I didn't have to adjust anything (thank goodness!!!)
I'm still not a terrific seamstress, but this machine takes something I absolutely hated and made it enjoyable.
