4.0 out of 5 stars Updating
First new machine in over 30 years and the many new features are wonderful! Still find it faster to thread the needle than use the needle threader but maybe as my eyes age I will appreciate it more. I am primarily a quilter and don't use many of the stitches but what I do use is so EASY. I especially enjoy the light weight of the machine. My old one was almost 40...

I recently broke a gear on my 28 yr old Singer Touch&Sew and decide to replace it with this model based on the features advertised and the editorial review. [no customer reviews available] What a disappointment.
Immediately noticeable is the poor lighting. The light shines on the left side of the thread plate, not on the stitching, and is made worse by a shadow from the auto needle threader.
Threading was easy but thread slips easily and frequently from the thread guide near the needle. I did not try the needle threader. I have been used to a self winding bobbin so winding the bobbin was annoying but not difficult. The bobbin cover is clear and must be lifted off instead of sliding out of the way,and is easily misplaced. The machine runs smoothly and quietly, but I am comparing it to a 28 yr old machine. Stitches are flat and even. Reverse stitching speed is slow only and you must release the foot pedal completely before going forward. this may be a good feature for a novice, but I found it to be tedious an time consuming. The feed on reverse is poor causing bunching.
Another annoying feature is the needle rising whenever you stop. You must push a button to lower the needle if you want to turn the fabric. These features really disturb the "flow" of your project. My last disappointment was the rolled hem pressor foot. The rolled edge is so far from the feed you must advance the fabric about an inch and a half unhemmed in order to stitch. I do not recommend this machine. I plan to return it and get my Touch& Sew repaired.

The first one I received has a defective bobbin winder, it only wound the bottom half of the bobbin. When I called Singer directly they suggested I hold the thread up with my fingers...
They did replace it but the second one is defective as well. The reverse lever that stalls after reversing causing you to release and then re-apply pressure is a pain. It bunches up any material thicker than simple cottons. The light is worthless. My machine sounds like grinding gears and the delay after releasing foot pedal is very annoying.... Would not recommend this machine at all. I have tried to return for refund but singer does not give any refunds... so beware

2.0 out of 5 stars Great for Pillowcases - Bad for anything else, November 24, 2004
This review is from: Factory-Reconditioned SINGER 2638 52-Stitch-Function Sewing Machine (Kitchen)
I've had my machine nearly two weeks now. I've made some beautiful pillow cases, but I cannot work with any fabric heavier than that! It bunches up and ties horrific knots in fleece, flannel, denim, I've adjusted everything from tension to feed dogs, nothing will help this machine. The one step buttonhole would be amazing if it weren't tying knots in my fleece. Decorative stitches are beautiful on lightweight fabric, but again, useless on medium to heavy fabric.
Automatic threader works well for me. Would NOT recommend this product.

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of Time, August 29, 2005
This review is from: Factory-Reconditioned SINGER 2638 52-Stitch-Function Sewing Machine (Kitchen)
This "reconditioned" sewing machine is a real waste of good time. I ordered two of them; each was defective. The first one had a bent arm onto which the accessory case slid. The second simply did not sew properly. When you stop to think about it, how can there be so many "reconditioned" machines if they are a good product in the first place? Another thing that is curious is that the machine comes with a piece of cloth upon which there are a variety of stitches as if to show you that they have tested the machine before shipment. The two machines I got had strangely identical sample pieces of cloth. I think they have a person working night and day on a functioning machine turning out these samples to include with each "reconditioned" sewing machine. Spend a little money, do yourself a favor and get a sewing machine with a good reputation.

To begin with, the needle threader is really easy to use. And the stitches are so easy to select and use. This machine does blind stitching and easier button holes than my old machine. All this in a low-priced machine.

My wife says that she loves sewing on this sewing machine and has been sewing for over 50 years. It is easy to thread, easy to use. In short she is very happy with it. This was our first purchase over Amazon.com and the price was right, delivery was good and the product is all it was supposed to be. This will not be our only purchase from Amazon.com. We are already looking at some other items we could use.

4.0 out of 5 stars A beginners opinion, January 9, 2004

This review is from: Factory-Reconditioned SINGER 2638 52-Stitch-Function Sewing Machine (Kitchen)
I am a new sewer, and I bought this machine a few months ago. It had the features my mother and mother-in-law suggested, so I gave it a shot. I am really enjoying the process of learning to sew, and I feel this machine desearves a lot of the credit. It has auto tention so you don't have to worry about finding the tention, which I have heard is very difficult, especially for a beginner. It has sewing speed control, which lets me set the speed I want so I don't accidently go faster then I would like. I was always told that botton holes are really hard to do. But once I figured out how to set the machine for it, button holes are actually fun for me. I like the auto bobbin winder, and the option to do auto needle threading too. The only problem I had was with the instruction manual. The directions are not always the clearest, like with the botton hole set up. I would also have liked it to go into more detail with the purpose of different feet, like the satin stitch foot, and tell you what stich works best with it. So if you are a beginner, then I would suggest buying a how to sew book with this machine. Personally I am glad I got mine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Machine, November 24, 2003

I LOVE this machine. I have another machine that works very well but could not pass up the deal I got for this machine.

If you are looking for a mechanical only machine this machine is great. It is very quiet compare to other machines in under $500 range. The self threader works great and really helps prevent eye strain trying to find that needle hole. The one button hole step w/foot (included) is a great time saver. Know more wondering if you got the hole big enough or if it was too small. I really like the needle speed control, especially with fine decorative stitching, on tiny clothes. The telescoping thread holder was very handy also, when using the twin needles.
I have had the machine for 3 weeks and have made several items all ready: 3 fleece jackets, Formal Dress, Purse, Pants, and 4 pillows. I did not have one problem, all stitching was straight and even.
The drop feed feature is great also, embroidery is so much easier without having to place a cover over the feed dogs.

What needs improvement:
The bobbin cover must be lifted off, I prefer the slide back cover instead.

Other then that, machine works great and I would tell anyone looking for a machine to learn on or replace another machine, this one will make you happy.
