Product Description

SINGER 6038 offers just the right amount of bells and whistles to satisfy advanced sewers without scaring away novices. Pleasingly rounded in form, the free-arm design machine offers 46 stitch functions, 19 of which are built-in, with stitch width and length selectors, push-button reverse, and an extra-wide zigzag capability (6 mm). Other conveniences include an automatic one-step buttonhole system, top drop-in bobbin, automatic needle threader and easy threading system, three-position needle selector, and twin needle capability. Six snap-on presser feet are included: all-purpose, buttonhole, button, zipper, zigzag, and blind stitch hem. Accessories can be stored in the machine and include three bobbins, seven needles, quilting guide, screwdriver, lint brush, oil bottle, and various extra parts. The machine features a built-in sewing light and carry handle. In addition to the comprehensive owner's manual, an instructional video is included which certainly makes learning the threads easier. SINGER covers the sewing machine with a 25-year mechanical warranty and two-year electrical warranty.

I was so excited about getting this machine. so many more features than the similarly priced brother machines at wal-mart. i grew up with the singer name, and know it's reputation for quality machines that last forever. well forever was way too short on this one. cutting the price corner and getting the refurbished machine was a big mistake. it arrived with everything in tact, looked shiny and new, despite having a plain brown box with "factory serviced" stamped on the side (note: this box doesn't seem to be adequately padded for the tough and tumble world of ground shipping). when I went to use it, it didn't work. lights on, but nobody's home. on closer inspection, there is a screw missing from the external case (evidenced by a small marking in the plastic and an empty threaded hole) and in some places the case is not even put together right (plastic overlapping where it should be tongue-in groove). Singer only covers refurbished machines for 90 days (full warranty) and 1 year for the motor and belts. But service will cost you plenty with shipping (this monster weighs in at 17lb) unless you live near a service center. Needless to say, this one is going back to amazon and I'll never buy a "serviced" model again.

I recently purchased a singer model 6038, for my wife for one her Christmas gifts.
I received it today 12-2-03.
Wow, it is missing the manual and the instruction book.
There was also no power cord inside, or a foot pedal.
There was no instructional video.
Then when I took a good look at the machine. There was a long yellow melted spot where they must have put a lit cigarette while they were fixing it. Then before putting a bag over the machine it was wiped down with an oily car rag. And the inside of the box smells like pee. And now I get to pay to ship it back.

The 6038, a fine machine, is also listed by Amazon for substantially less. The listing here for a higher price, $230, seems to be an error. Search Amazon for this model at a fair, correct price. Amazon seems not to have noticed this discrepency.
