From Library Journal
The editors are not attempting "to establish a canon of American fiction" with this first entry in the new 16-volume Facts on File Bibliography Se ries (also forthcoming are volumes covering fiction from 1588 to 1865 and from 1866 to 1918). Their goal is to provide organized lists of U.S. authors' works. Compiled by numerous contributors, this reference covers 219 fiction writers, selected on the basis of a current high reputation. Entries contain a brief paragraph about each author's genre, style, or themes followed by lists of his or her books and of critical works. The editors have also included a list of 100 basic reference tools for U.S. literature and a bibliography of background works for the period covered. Indexes include a chronology of noteworthy fiction and events, a list of journal acronyms, and an index of scholars and critics. Recommended for academic libraries supporting 20th-century U.S. literature studies.
