Editorial Reviews

In three connected movements, 'Fade' collects a series of harmonic "moments" of varying densities, complexities, timbres and lengths. Throughout the work, these moments – like elements in a mobile – are in a constant state of changing perspective. Composer Rick Cox is a composer/multi-instrumentalist whom guitarist/composer Ry Cooder called "the hidden master of the crepuscular and the diaphanous." Cox was an early explorer/developer of "prepared electric guitar" techniques, and his concert pieces often employ himself (electric guitar, woodwinds, and electronics) in the company of other instrumentalists. He performs and records with Jon Hassel and his unique sounds are heard on many of Thomas Newman’s popular film scores.

3.0 out of 5 stars Quiet, relaxing ambient music from a west coast tradition, December 17, 2011

This review is from: Fade (Audio CD)
Fade is another ambient music recording from electric guitarist Rick Cox. This is ambient music, and it is beautiful. I have other recordings by Rick Cox, and this one isn't the best one, but it's still nice. Rick Cox is joined on this recording by Thomas Newman, piano, and Peter Freeman, bass and signal processors. This is music from the tradition of the Cold Blue Music label, which focused attention on experimental and ambient, mostly west coast music as far back as the early 1980's. Fade fits squarely in the ambient music category (as opposed to experimental), at least in terms of the sound experience. There aren't any chances being taken with this music-it's pretty and relaxing and, dare I say, lame. My other criticism is that there is only 25 minutes of music here. There is plenty of room for these musicians to stretch out and either explored some interesting territory, or at least give the listener more music to add to the experience. It ends up feeling like not much effort was put into this project, and I end up, as a purchaser and a listener, feeling short-changed on this one.
