Urbanity Unplugged, October 6, 2000
This review is from: Fade Into Light (Audio CD)
The 90s saw a lot of artists issuing unplugged versions of their works-I guess they wanted to show their fans that if you stripped away all the orchestrations and overdubs that they really could play an instrument and carry a tune. Sometimes unplugged worked and sometimes it didn't. Boz Scaggs has developed over the course of his career into one of the most sophisticated R&B stylists on the scene today. His brief flirtation with disco and lachrymose pop aside, he continues to show that he has the right stuff. I was scrolling the album list for "Moments" when I encountered this. Never having seen it, I clicked in and looked at the song list. Most were familiar titles but I was intrigued by the idea of the Boz unplugged. I blanched when I saw the price but swallowed hard and bought it anyhow. After all, it is no more than a concert ticket. If the concert sucks, you are out your money. If the CD sucks, you can always pawn it off on someone else. Don't you be put off by the price. This is a great CD! I like the whole album, but am particularly impressed by the unplugged selections. The intimacy and romance is incredible. This is the perfect album to play while wining and dining a loved one. My favorite cuts are Harbor Lights, We're All Alone, and an outstanding rendition of Simone. If you haven't heard this album, and are a Boz Scaggs fanatic, then it behooves you to pick this one up. You will be glad you did. It is truly urbanity unplugged.

Fade Into Light, simply shines so brightly, April 19, 2000
This review is from: Fade Into Light (Audio CD)
As with so many of us who lived in the 70s,you could not escape the hype in 1976 that surrounded the release of Silk Degrees.I had sentenced Boz Scaggs to the vault of yesterday. After listening to songs from Some Change and Come On home, quite by chance on late night local radio,I was blown away, this was the man I had remembered on that classic gem,Loan me A Dime.Come on Home simply is a great tribute to R&B.My interest in the *Boz* was rekindled. So when I went serching for this CD I was doing it on faith alone, and I have not been disappointed. This is a true gem, from the jazzy and bluesy feel of *Lowdown* as the opening track through the unplugged versions of Boz classics, this is a seriously smooth cool and adult recording. The man is a craftsman and the musicians and backup singers on this CD are first class. The recording allows him to shine out and the arrangements fit many moods and situations which makes listening to this a rewarding experience.I would rate this a must for any serious Boz fan and go so far as to say thatit should be in everyones collection. If you love well crafted R&B with a jazz feel this is for you.Listen to the title track and enjoy,an excellent song, and then listen to the reworking of some old friends from Silk Degrees and Some Change, and realize why this artist has survived and flourished when others are just a faint forgotten memory.5 stars all the way.

Fade into View, January 21, 2002
This review is from: Fade Into Light (Audio CD)
The one cut on this album included in the anthology is just a tease. Having just received the Japan import, this 1996 CD is a true gem. The sparse instrumentation, coupled with several new arrangements of old Boz hits, makes for a very soulful listening experience. With songs included from at least 3 decades, I too am at a loss as to why this wasn't released in the U.S. After seeing Boz in concert last fall (the DIG tour), we wondered about the "laid back" attitude of the show in general, and the arrangements of the "disco" songs in particular(not to mention the lack of songs from "Come On Home" performed live). "Fade Into Light" helps explain the trasition and the progression of Boz's music since he started on Virgin. Very excellent addition to your Boz collection. Please keep 'em coming Mr. Scaggs!
