Do You Really Wanna Know

Biography

Subtlety is often an underrated quality. That’s partly why Papercuts’ new album, Fading Parade—the band’s fourth overall, and first for Sub Pop—is such a breath of fresh air. Papercuts prinicipal Jason Robert Quever’s beautiful songwriting is thoughtful, quietly evocative and simultaneously ambitious. This is dream pop of the highest order, but unlike a lot ... Editorial Reviews

Papercuts prinicipal Jason Robert Quever's beautiful songwriting is thoughtful, evocative, subtle, and simultaneously ambitious. Crafted over the course of several months at The Hangar in Sacramento, with Thom Monahan, and at Quever's own Pan American Recording studio, Fading Parade is meticulously designed pop music, with a fully developed sense of space and a sturdy wall of sound. Imagine Belle & Sebastian teaming up with Slowdive and recording with Phil Spector back when he was killing it in the studio rather than, well, you know. Fading Parade is Papercuts' first album for Sub Pop.

Another Papercuts release, another opportunity for Jason Quever to get grudging respect from critics and next to no response from the listening public. I just don't get it. In my mind, Quever is producing some of the most intriguing and evocative melodies of any songwriter today.

That said, "Fading Parade" is a bit of a mixed bag. The sequencing feels a little off, it doesn't flow quite right. But there is much transcendence to be found, particularly in the one-two punch of "Do You Really Wanna Know" and "Do What You Will." He's still got the gift, folks, and there's a certain confidence here that bodes well for the future, from an album title that seems to sum up the band's sound to the fuller, bolder arrangements. Not to mention Quever's voice, which has always been his secret weapon. He lets it loose here, and it soars higher than ever.

Dream pop keeps producing new fine records and Papercuts latest disc `Fading Parade' is another keeper. Beach House set the standard last year with the excellent `Teen Dream' and Papercuts adds another to the list.

From the opener "Do You Really Wanna Know" (a slowed down Drums song) on we can hear the soft, almost muffled production and the double tracked hazy vocals. "I'll See You Later I Guess" starts off as a baroque 60s song fitting the Zombies and Procul Harum mold before melding into more Beach Housy stuff. When we mention Beach House we have to point out the great track "Wait Till I'm Dead".

The voice, though weak, is perfect for the music but it is a good thing the album is as long as it is. More would become too boring and bring the album down. His voice is in the high range and sometimes sounds like Nico.

`Fading Parade' is a good example for a Dream Pop album. It doesn't break any musical boundaries and is too similar to other, and better, bands in the genre, but `Fading Parade' might nevertheless end up on some end-of-the-year lists.
