This is an excellent compilation of fado songs, includes audio CD and a great book. The origin and roots of every Fado song on the CD is described in the book including the music sheet so you can sing and play along on your guitar. Even if you are not musically inclined you will love the accurate history of fado and wonderful photography included in the book.

If you're a musician and you love Fado, this book is a MUST HAVE!!! The cd it comes with has so many wonderful, classic Fado songs. The book also has the chords so you can play along with on the guitar!! Some of the chords don't match the key of the recording, but it wasn't too difficult for me to figure out the key on the cd and transpose all the chords. And I think I only had to do that on 3 or 4 of the 26 songs!!
Even if you're not a musician, this book is great because it is an excellent read! Mr. Cohen does a great job of explaining the history of Fado and on the 1 page explanation of each song, you also learn a lot about the artist, about what the song is about and he sometimes explains the history of the specific song. So, I guess I should change my first sentence. If you love Fado (whether or not you are a musician) this book is a must have!

As a lover and collector of Portuguese Fado, I was delighted to find this book. The author's extraordinary knowledge of the this iconic Portuguese art form is presented in a concise and well written text, accompanied by some wonderful photos of performers and places. The CD included in the book is a treasure of old, out of print and obscure (to younger people) recordings that illustrate the development and scope of Fado. The sheet music is an excellent addition as well.
If you are not familiar with Fado I would recommend several recordings that will delight you. Art of Amalia; Fado Em Mim,Concerto em Lisboa w/Bonus DVD ;Spirit of Fado, Vol. 1. |
