Editorial Reviews

Review

"With the faerie and mortal lands crumbling away, a teenage girl must work with both worlds if anyone is to survive.

The Bones of Faerie series concludes with this high-stakes adventure for Liza. Relative peace has descended upon Liza’s town, where she practices her summoner magic and waits for her half-faerie baby sister to be born. But the forest is showing new dangers, though subtle ones: a strange-smelling gray leaf that crumbles away; a dying squirrel whose back half has turned to dust; “a pair of empty boots, as far apart as a man might stand, filled with the same dust.” Liza’s quest to find out what’s wrong reveals fresh disasters. In Faerie, the dust is everywhere but hardly as tragic as the fire fever— radiation poisoning—that’s devastated the population since the War. In the mortal world, the dust is rapidly spreading in the bloodthirsty, carnivorous forest that was Faerie’s weapon against the humans. Liza’s solution to the problem of the rapidly unwinding universe is not always easy to follow, but the personal is sufficiently compelling to outweigh any problems with the metaphysical.

In a satisfying trilogy conclusion, Liza confronts the conflicts between saving the world and saving her friends in an environment where nobody is willing to let go of the last generation’s hatreds." --Kirkus Reviews

"Fans of the first two novels of this series will be delighted to read the wrap-up to this trilogy. Liza continues to be a strong female protagonist, and the supporting cast of characters, both faerie and human, are well drawn and interesting. Besides the suspense of survival, this story also explores the themes of use and abuse of powers and talents. This is a satisfying finish to the Bones of Faerie trilogy that both junior and senior high students will be eager to read." -- VOYA

Liza has had enough of adventure in her life. She knows better than to expect life to suddenly become easy, but she's looking forward to returning home for the birth of her new half-sister and maybe settling down with her wolfy boyfriend, Matthew. But Matthew reports a strange new problem -- plants and animals are crumbling to dust. Then, on her first night back home, Liza and her healer friend, Allie, are trapped by Faerie glamour and taken captive. How can two human girls, even girls gifted with magic, ever escape their Faerie prison when all odds are against them? And how can they stop the weird crumbling threatening to destroy both worlds?

Faerie After is a satisfying conclusion to the Bones of Faerie trilogy. It builds on the world set up in the previous books, introduces intriguing new twists, and neatly finishes the story while leaving room for possible further development. Even through dire circumstances, relationships are key to this story. Friendship and family connections between human and Faerie, teacher and student, parent and child drive the story. Those relationships, even the broken ones, are what make me want to return to the story world again and again.

FAERIE AFTER is the concluding volume in the BONES OF FAERIE trilogy, and if you haven't read the first two books (BONES OF FAERIE & FAERIE WINTER), you should definitely check them out before tackling this one, because your reading experience will be all the richer from knowing the history of the characters and their backgrounds and relationships.

Liza is anticipating the birth of her sister, when she is confronted with a mysterious crumbling that erases the world bit by bit. Liza suspects it is tied somehow to the Faerie realm. After the War between the humans and the fey, both camps have long been in survival mode. The Fey suffer from "Fire Fever," a kind of radiation sickness, and their magical weapons have left plants and trees seeking human blood and bone, while wild things like owls and hawks carry poison in their talons. It is a harsh world that Liza inhabits, where magic is distrusted, and yet all children born after the War carry the seeds of magic.

This new threat will test Liza's loyalties and stretch her to the limit. Liza has always distrusted the Faerie folk, with good reason. And yet, to mend both worlds, Liza will have to set aside that distrust, and use her summoning magic in new ways.

Some of the themes Janni Lee Simner explores are how far you would go to save a friend, even if he or she doesn't want to be saved; the realities of the aftermath of war; the price of love; sacrifice and the harsh reality of loss.

If you like your heroines strong and your fantasies dark, with no easy solutions, you will enjoy the satisfying conclusion to this post-apocalyptic series.

As soon as I picked up this book I knew I would be in for a treat. The third book of this fabulous trilogy definitely delivered! So much to take in, you feel like you're once again transported to the gate to Faerie. It was the perfect ending to the trilogy - full of romance, loyalty, betrayal, love, anger, fear, and so much more! And just as soon as I thought I knew what was going to happen next, a great plot twist to keep me on my toes. Simner is now one of my very favorite authors and this trilogy is one of the best I have ever had the pleasure of reading.
