5.0 out of 5 stars This book is REALLY good! June 23, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Okay, I admit it--Angela is my friend. She got to publish this book through Kickstarter, and I backed her because she was my good friend, and I could (and you should help people if you can, right?) If you're not familiar with Kickstarter (and I wasn't, until this happened--but check it out!), you often get rewards for meeting the project's financial goals. My reward was the very first bound edition of "Faerie Blood", signed by the author. I wasn't expecting much in the way of authorship, but I read it, so I could discuss the plot. Imagine my delight--I'm a voracious reader, always looking for new authors--to discover that she's GOOD...really good! This book held my attention in a way few have done in a very long time--I believe I read it in two days. And now I want the sequel--even though I know that Angela's not done writing it yet. She's better than a lot of established writers I've tried recently. Kendis is someone you really like and can identify with, and you just want to hug Christopher. Read this book--if you like fantasy/sci-fi, you won't be disappointed. And if you happen to enjoy a band called Great Big Sea, you'll especially love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Harry Potter for (alleged) grown-ups August 29, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Fast-paced and geektastic, Faerie Blood starts off as a classic tale of Awakening. But it pulls ahead of the birth-blood-'n-fate pack in two important ways. First of all, the Special/Chosen characters remain characters - they retain their personalities, their priorities, and their individuality rather than being subsumed by their destinies. And, even more wondrous, the non-Special characters also remain characters, rather than fading to the status of props and setting. That's credible magical realism right there.

There's also plenty of action. Korra'ti doesn't waste a lot of time on exposition, choosing instead to let her characters show themselves through their own words and choices. There's no playing catch-up with background, and the characters are every bit as surprised as the reader when weirdness goes down. And a lot of weirdness goes down.

My favorite aspect of the story was the deep thread of affection - the characters' genuine love and respect for each other, love of music, love of home. If you've ever truly loved where you live, this tale will strike a resonant chord with you as it did with me - while scaring you out of your wits and maybe making you miss your stop on the subway.

4.0 out of 5 stars Loved the magic December 29, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Great opening hook with a troll attack. Interesting fey and Warder magic; I especially liked the magical connection between the two main characters. The descriptions of music, Seattle and computer programming felt authentic. Looking forward to the promised sequel!
Quibble: I wanted Kendis and Christopher to kiss long before they actually did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting Urban Fantasy December 16, 2012
By Mikaela
Format:Kindle Edition
I bought this book on a Fictionwise sale last year, and for a number of reasons ( primarily getting a bit burned out on Urban Fantasy) I didn't read it until now. I am glad I finally read it, though.

This was an enjoyable read. When I started reading it felt like I was walking next to Kendis as she struggled to adapt to the fact that trolls, elves and magic existed. The Seattle setting was detailed and added to the feeling that I was a silent witness to the havoc that elves and magic wrought on Seattle.

As she struggled to stop the Elves, Kendis met several interesting characters. There is Christopher and his struggle with his own powers. Millicent, with her gruff facade. Elessir... with a twisted kind of honor.

The plot was fast paced and filled with unexpected twists. And I couldn't stop reading, I had to know if Kendis managed to defeat the Elves Unfortunately, after the final battle, I lost interest. I finished to book, but some of the things that happened felt both logical and over the top. ( A paradox, I know.)

Still this was a well written novel with a cast of intriguing characters, and I'll definitely read the sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story hope to see more July 6, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I truly enjoyed this book. I was really happy to read a contemporary fantasy novel with an african American/biracial heroine. Some of the secondary characters were not really fleshed out, and the book feels like the beginning of a series. A few minor typos here and there, no fall in bed on page four nonsense .... The dark fae and why they want our heroine really isn't clear. But hey, it's a first novel, a fun and engaging summer read. Check it out!

4.0 out of 5 stars Rockin' good fun! June 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This is Angela Korra'ti's first book, and it has all the enthusiasm and pent-up creativity of many of the best first books. The voice of the narrator, a geeky Seattleite who finds herself suddenly able to see all kinds of faerie beings running amok in the Northwest, is enthusiastic, humorous, and original. Knowing Angela personally, I have to add that Kendis has all the charm of Angela herself, and it's a delight to see her other self so well pictured. Her love for Seattle, music, Elvis Presley, elves, and computers is front and center, and it's an endearing and beguiling mulligan stew. The supporting characters, especially her best friend and her aunt, are vividly described, though the romantic lead is a bit wooden at times. But you didn't get this book for the romance: you got it for the plot, which goes racing along merrily, veering from scuzzy Capitol Hill dive pubs to the Burke Gilman bike trail to the windshield-wiper-defeating Seattle downpours, running from trolls and nefarious Unseelie and Seelie courts alike. I'm looking forward with great pleasure to the sequel, and to other books from Angela.

More About the Author

The first thing Angela Korra'ti ever wrote, at age 8, was a short story about a girl spirited away to rule over the leprechauns for a day. She progressed rapidly to pretending to take notes in class when she was actually writing novels! Music is equally fundamental to her life, thanks to playing flute and piccolo in school and an adulthood dabbling in flute, guitar, bouzouki, and mandolin. In anything she writes, music is likely to appear.

Angela lives in Kenmore, Washington, with her partner and her housemate, two cats, and a whole lot of computers and instruments. Though she's a mild-mannered former employee of a major metropolitan newspaper, rumors that she is a superhero are exaggerated. (Even if she did pull the door off a refrigerator.)

Faerie Blood is Angela's first published novel. Come let her know what you thought at angelakorrati.com!
