Editorial Reviews

Review

Simple but lyrical language, resourceful female protagonists, and a mixed bag of supernatural delights should hold an allure for fans and newcomers alike. (Publishers Weekly )

From the Back Cover

Dangerous promises and beguiling threats swirl together in a dozen stories of enchantments, dark and light, by New York Times bestselling author Melissa Marr. Uncanny and unexpected creatures appear from behind bushes, rise from under the seas, or manifest from seasonal storms to pursue the objects of their attention—with amorous or sinister intent—relentlessly.

From the gentle tones of a story-teller’s cadences to the terror of a blood sacrifice, tales of favorite characters from Marr’s Wicked Lovely novels mix with accounts of new characters for readers to fall in love with . . . or to fear.

Lush, seductive, and chilling, Melissa Marr’s stories revel in the unseen magic that infuses the world as we know it.

More About the Author

Hmm, I'm never good at the bio bit. I used to teach college & bartend, now I write novels. I love to meet new people, to hear their stories, to walk through new streets and see new vistas. I enjoy art in all its guises--graffiti, surrealist paintings, classic sculptures, tattoos, interesting buildings, Renoir, photography . . . Art & nature, they feed my soul & thus my muse.

Faery Tales and Nightmares is an anthology of short stories that will transport readers into a fantastic mystical world filled with intrigue, gothic magical realms, and dark forbidden fantasy. All of these short stories are cleverly written, filled with twists and turns, and wonderful character development. Marr possesses this amazing ability to draw readers in and keep them entranced, her writing is clear and concise, and her world building skills are phenomenal. Most of her character's, whether old or new, are full of so much grit, strength, determination, and spirit that it's hard not to like even the most unlikable ones. The otherworlds she's able to transport readers to, are unlike any other that I've personally read before. They are beautifully dark, deeply rich with lush overwrought emotion, and are as dangerous as they are seductive.

The beauty in Faery Tales and Nightmares is the variety Marr offers with her short stories. Some of them are set in her Wicked Lovely series, allowing readers to re-visit beloved characters and other's are new and introduce different characters with interesting stories of their own to tell. All of the stories possess vivid descriptions that are wickedly dark and alluring, intensely grotesque in a sense, or bittersweet and charming. There's a lot brought to the table with these original shorts that will resonate with readers on a deeper level. Marr has this fantastic way of giving a fresh and exciting spin on the myth's that few of her short works are based in. There's a wonderful sense of balance between all of the short stories, which there are twelve all together, included in this collection of stories.

Fans of Marr's Wicked Lovely series will definitely want to read this novel, as there are glimpses of beloved characters such as Nial, Irial, Devlin, Ani, Seth, among other's that show up and paint such a wonderfully elaborate picture of their worlds. If I personally had to pick out my favorite of the short works, I would have to say that I really enjoyed The Sleeping Girl and the Summer King, Love Struck, Winter's Kiss, and Old Habits. All of these short pieces of fiction were enthralling, deeply imaginative, filled with gripping emotion, and hidden darkness. Faery Tales and Nightmares is such a wickedly alluring novel that any fan of Melissa Marr herself, Holly Black, or Kimberly Derting would be sure to love.

THE FAERYS VIEW

Melissa Marr is one of my favorite authors, of course me loving all things Fae has nothing to do with it but The Wicked Lovely Series will forever be one of my favorite series so I had to give Faery Tales and Nightmares a try even though short story compilations aren't really my thing. In Ms. Marr's case, she made reading short stories so pleasurable that I'm hoping against hope that she'll do it again!

Faery Tales and Nightmares is compiled of twelve short stories, most of them revolving around characters in Ms. Marr's most wickedly awesome Wicked Lovely series but not all of them. There are some fabulous stories that delivered deliciously dark and decadent reading-in true Melissa Marr style. Ms. Marr's creative imagination knows no bounds and I'm forever in awe of her ability to draw me into a story to the point where I'm right there with the characters-in living color! Very few authors are as accomplished as Ms. Marr: her characters are well fleshed out, beautifully portrayed and step off the page realistic. Every story is vivid with exquisite detail and carried me along on a tide of pure happiness from start to finish. Every ending was absolutely perfect for each story which left me with an extremely satisfied feeling!

My favorite non-Wicked Lovely Stories:

Transition: a vampiric pleasure that I truly loved! A young girl get's the last laugh in this creepy yet clever tale.

Love Struck: This was fantastic! A tale about two Selchie [Selkie] brothers and an unwitting girl on a beach. It had a great story based on Selchie lore and a beautiful love story but... what love story ever goes off without a BIG hitch? Especially when someone's underlying feelings are anything but honorable?

My Favorite Wicked Lovely stories are [Spoiler if you haven't read Darkest Mercy] :

Unexpected Family: This takes place AFTER Darkest Mercy when Seth receives a letter from his parents who are on vacation. They rarely contact Seth and they are in trouble, Seth takes Niall with him and what happens when they reach Seth's parents is not exactly what they were expecting.

Cotton Candy Skies: Rabbit, sweet Rabbit! Always taking care of Tish and Ani finds himself without anyone to take care of. He ends up in Faery and although he has everything he could possibly want at his disposal, he's lonely and grieving the loss of Tish. Then he meets Olivia, remember her? She's the artist that paints with the sky and completely anti-social, talking to nobody- that is until she meets Rabbit. Will Rabbit finally have a life and love of his own?

I truly loved Faery Tales and Nightmares and I can't say there was one story in there that I didn't like, I loved them all but to review them all would take me pages so I plucked out some favorites!

Quick & Dirty: An intriguing collection of short stories. Just enough to make you need to read her other books.

Opening Sentence: The green glow of eyes and sulfurous breath shimmer in the fog as the Nightmares come into range. **From: Where Nightmares Walk**

The Review:

This book is a collection of twelve short stories, all written by Melissa Marr, six of which follow the characters from her Wicked Lovely series. The other six are unrelated stories, apparently based on a variety of inspirations, according to her introduction.

In the story Old Habits, we first meet, at least in this publication, her characters from the Wicked Lovely series. Niall and Irial are the past, current and future faery Dark King (there is a transitional phase in the beginning). We witness, in this story, what all comes with being the newly appointed Dark King, and what lengths some of his subjects would go to protect him, and keep him happy. When challenged by the faery High Court, everyone, including the new Dark King, must join in the fray. Ms. Marr almost makes this fight sound like a good time.

The story Stopping Time features Niall, Irial and their mortal love, Leslie. Leslie once resided in the faery Dark Court and discovered she was better off living in the mortal world. What she has, though, is trouble living without the two main faeries in her life. It is a most unusual love triangle, for all three of them are in love with each other. In this story, Leslie comes under attack by her very own brother, who kidnaps her in an attempt to draw out Niall or Irial, his true objective being the capture of a "freak." Niall, Irial and others must then come together to save her from him. As a result, Leslie realizes that to sever all ties is unreasonable, and delivers the two best lines ever. "But it's okay to stop time every so often to be with someone you love." and "Letting you go in the morning will hurt, but I don't mind hurting a little if it's for something beautiful."

In the story Unexpected Family, we become more acquainted with Seth, the onetime mortal friend of Niall, and now the faery King of Order (though he hates the title) and apparent opposite, or balance as it were, of the Dark King. Seth receives a letter from his mortal parents requesting his presence at some campground hidden in the mountains of California, far away from civilization. When he finally arrives there, with Niall in tow, he realizes quickly that his parents are surrounded by faeries. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on your view, taking care of this group means he must reveal his new self to them and his parents. But all is well, as apparently the fey are just there to pay their respects to their new King, and Seth's parental units are just plain amazed.

This book also includes:

Love Struck - A beautiful little story of a selchie and his mortal love.
Transition - A story of vampires, deceit and murder. Remind me never to attend any parties with you, Ms. Marr. Especially if this story is where such inspiration leads. *shudder*
Flesh for Comfort - A seriously creepy tale of supernatural "plastic surgery."
And so much more.

The one thing I have to say is this; I now NEED to read her other books, specifically those in her Wicked Lovely series. If only I could afford them. Maybe, one day, I will win the lottery so I can buy myself a couple thousand dollar giftcard to Amazon or B&N so I can pay for all the books that I want to buy after doing reviews for Angela and Dark Faerie Tales. Damn her for introducing me to all these new authors and series', laugh out loud. Seriously, the best "job" ever.

FTC Advisory: Harper Teen provided me with a copy of Faery Tales and Nightmares. No goody bags, sponsorships, "material connections," or bribes were exchanged for my review.
