Good Unit for the Study of Literary Devices,

Although the item description recommends this guide for middle school students, it is an effective resource for high school students as well. A brief synopsis of the novel and author background are included. Pre-reading activities focus on topics such as censorship and propaganda as related to government, media, and society. The guide is divided into three sections that correlate with Part I, II, and III of the novel. Each part includes vocabulary study, study questions, discussion questions, and a writing task (letter, essay). In Part I the study of literary devices focuses on the use of symbolism (fire, and light/dark), situational irony, simile, metaphor, and alliteration. Part II introduces the use of cliffhangers and provides further practice with literary devices introduced in Part I. Part III introduces allusion as related to the novel. Suggestions for post-reading activities are included.
