Book Description

1578860938 978-1578860937 March 15, 2004
Here is a book about the causes of violence and failure in America's schools. In it, H. Roy Kaplan helps explain why children underachieve, drop out, withdraw, become angry, and commit violent acts. Kaplan presents case studies from his experiences conducting workshops and mediating conflicts in schools with students, teachers, and administrators. He focuses on interpersonal relations among these groups and demonstrates that much of the conflict and low academic achievement in schools is the result of clashes over communication, fairness, class, and race. Readers will see how conflicts arise and what simple steps can be taken to prevent or alleviate them.

Many administrators and teachers will benefit from learning about the methods discussed in this book and be able to integrate them into their schools without sacrificing traditional curricula. These techniques will lead to more harmonious and productive learning environments in schools and improve student and staff morale. This book is must reading for parents, teachers, and school administrators, and should be required for education majors and their professors.

Editorial Reviews

Review

For too many of our children, their schools breed unhappiness and frustration. Through the voices of students and others, this book tells why and offers recommendations to prevent it. (Levine, Arthur )

I am so very moved and impressed by [Kaplan's] words and message... It strikes very close to my heart and has such an intense truth to it all. [This] book is much needed and needs to be read by so many other educators and administrators and law enforcement. (Lee Mun Wah )

...there is no doubt that Kaplan has a deep and abiding love for children, and that their interests are close to his heart. His untiring and ongoing efforts to reach them in the face of staggering obstacles, and the fact that he wrote a book chronicling these efforts, stands as a testimony that while a complete cure for the ills that plague large urban public schools may be unrealistic, one can still strive for incremental progress. (St. Petersburg Times (Florida) )

Kaplan's tone is...encouraging. (Reference & Research Book News )

...focuses on interpersonal conflicts that occur in school settings and demonstrates that much of the conflict is the result of clashes over communication, fairness, class and race. (Teaching Tolerance )

H. Roy Kaplan presents an honest and searing account of the many emotional, social, and cultural struggles that too often confront America's teenagers when they go to school each day. Kaplan writes from experience and he cares deeply about giving young people the power and the skills they need to overcome the differences, real or perceived, that keep them apart. (Richard W. Riley )

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Read For...well...Anybody In America, January 20, 2005
This review is from: Failing Grades: How Schools Breed Frustration, Anger, and Violence, and How to Prevent It (Paperback)
If you want to know what's going on today in U.S. schools, as a direct reflection of the greater society, I might add; if you want to know what the students are really struggling with and what teachers really say behind closed doors, this is the book for you. As an educator myself and an expert on both race relations and working with juvenile delinquents, I am greatly encouraged to see Roy Kaplan's important work in a form so readily accessible to the average reader. Some of what he reports is unsettling or even downright scary, but pretending we're asleep is not the answer. In fact it only brings further problems, as we have been forced to face in recent years. Kaplan puts the truth right out there on front street and then gives us the direction we need to go to make the appropriate and much needed changes. How much better can it get than that? The only thing the book isn't quite straight-up about is how crucial Roy Kaplan and people like him are to the process of healing he describes. It takes a real artist with the heart of a lion to wade into the turbulent waters he describes and make it to the other side.
