Phillip Van Saun summarizes years of crisis management experience in a format that can be easily studied and applied to various situations and industries. It not only illustrates the importance of planning for risk mitigation and crisis management, but also provides the reader with comprehensive and practical tools to do so. The book discusses crisis-related failures and offers insight and useful information to make organizations and businesses more crisis-resilient. Furthermore, it includes checklist-based tools and steps which are practical in both an academic setting and in the field for crisis gaming or needs assessments.

Format: Paperback
Phillip Van Saun's book serves as a practical crisis management guide based on the experiences of a well-qualified practitioner. This concise reference is based on a series of user-friendly checklist-based tools rather than attempting to devise a "perfect plan that will fail perfectly." Van Saun provides sound advice on building both crisis management teams and 'all-hazards' based plans and gives strategic crisis communications guidance including sample talking points. The book offers insight into key factors in crisis-related failures and provides suggestions for making both corporations and other organizations more crisis-resilient. Van Saun explains how to conduct crisis gaming and how to conduct a needs assessment to ensure that an organization has prudently mitigated all identified risks. Now there's no reason for failure to be an option for you as well...

Finally, a book worth reading on the subject of crisis management. Having worked with Phillip over the years, it does not surprise me to see such a thoughtful and useful book flow from his creative mind. Failure is an Option: A Primer and Guide for Managing Crises, is a well written and invaluable guide for anyone interested in crisis management. An easy and enjoyable read, Phillip has made this a no-brainer for anyone working in or around crisis management. The sample "Crisis & Continuity of Operations Plan" at the end of the book is a gift to the beginner as well as the seasoned leader. Providing a wealth of detail, this book would be worth the read if all it contained were the sample Plan. Do yourself, and your organization, a big favor and read this book as soon as you can.

If you find yourself in a crisis management, emergency management, or business continuity profession you should read this book and keep it close for continued reference. It is a one stop, how to handle any emergency roadmap. If you take the position that you will know what to do when confronted by an emergency/crisis you are pretty much guaranteeing a less than acceptable outcome. Preparation well in advance with constant updating and practice is the best way to insure a successful outcome. This book provides the tools to successfully manage anything that may come your way. Read it, embrace the lessons, and it still will not be easy to respond to an event but in the end your results will be far better than if you had not read this book.

Philip Van Saun has captured the essence of strategic planning, crisis management, and organizational success by encouraging the reader to focus on realistic outcomes and expectations. "Failure is an Option" is not a book on how to make excuses for defeats but gives training on being prepared for any scenario. What all decision makers in the military, emergency management, or even business corporations need is "ground truth" and advisers who have the courage to advocate losses in order to persevere through disasters. This book has empowered me to engage in major strategic planning on the senior staff level and should be including in all academic management curriculum.

I had the honor of being Mr. Van Saun's classmate at the Kennedy School of Government and he proved himself to be very astute at being able to present his thoughts in a clear and precise manner. His book Failure Is An Option, takes his practical experience and clasroom learning farther and presents a "tip of the spear" playbook on how to fully engage with crises whenver and wherever they arise. His book is an easy, quick read and the checklists he offers can be tailored to each situation, whether public or private sector borne. Thank you Philip for ofering such real and actionable guidance on how best to prepare for crisis.

One thing that seems to be consistent in American leadership, whether in academia or politics, is that it often times takes some type of disaster - whether manmade or natural, to wake us up. Spending my entire career in law enforcement I have been at the epicenter of everything from major earthquakes to commercial airline crashes to urban riots and mass shootings. "Failure Is An Option" is one of the most practical, teachable guides to handling disasters that I have come across in my 30 years of law enforcement and 20 years of teaching crises management.

His book offers valuable opportunities to learn from the mistakes of others - lessons that most prefer to learn from a distance when possible. For those who have already learned these lessons first-hand, the book helps us remember, analyze, reflect, and prepare before similar circumstances occur again. Finally, for those who like big picture explanations along with detailed or step-by-step tools, both are in the book. I believe this is an especially good book for people close to policy and program management. It offers a chance to walk in someone else's shoes before having to run in your own.
