About the Author

The oldest of six children born in seven years, Ellen Gibran-Hesse was so much her siblings' surrogate mother that when she went off to college, her parents blamed her for the family's subsequent deterioration. Ellen obtained a B.S. in psychology, worked for 10 years in nursing, practiced law for 12 years while raising her sons, volunteered with young people and studied child development. Ellen now has two college age sons, as well as two adopted young adults, one of whom was abandoned with her at 19 without a job or life skills to live on his own. Within 6 months, she had helped him to obtain a driver's license, job, car, and a place of his own to live. With this book, Ellen shares her parenting insights and coaching experiences so that all may enjoy the warm and rewarding relationships we want with our children.

This book makes the assumption that our children are still at home and on the couch because we have not given them the skills they need to become adults. The book suggests steps that need to occur such as getting a license, learning to apply for jobs etc. before they can become adults. The book disappoints in that it doesn't give parents ideas of what to do when your teen or young adult has the skills, but just does not use them.

I do believe that if you are a parent with an adult child at home who is lost and does not have a clue of what they need to do to make the big step into independence for themselves, Failure to Launch "How to Get Your Teens and Young Adults to Independence", is a must read. As a parent of adult children who are still living at home with me, I have applied Ellen's unique approach when setting expectations and goals that have resulted with real and qualified results. I am the webmaster for Ellen's website ([...]) and I have worked with Ellen for several years that include the development, production, and post production stages for this publication. Ellen's attention to detail and providing a quality product is second to none.
