Better than Red October,
By Vaughn (Ca, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fairbanks Risen (Hardcover)
It's takes a military man to write a military novel. This novel excelled anything that Tom Clancy wrote in its storytelling. It is fun to read. It is terrifyingly realistic. This novel will keep the military happy. A great read.
I loved it!

This book has a depth of knowledge I had never read before in a novel. But through all the details of the life of a serviceman a story is told that I could not put the book down once I had started. I recommend this book for anyone that wants realistic armed forces action.

Fairbanks Risen,
This review is from: Fairbanks Risen (Hardcover)
This story was GREAT!!. I served in the US Navy supervising the operations of Nuclear Power Plants aboard an Aircraft Carrier, knew and worked with many submariners as an instructor in the training programs of the Nuclear Navy, and am an active certificated commercial multi-engine pilot. Mr Foster weaves a believable account of what could happen if a skipper such as Nagamuchi were able to gain complete loyalty of a select few crewman. The battle damage to the surface ships is believable, as we all knew in a declared nuclear war, our ship, a mighty US Navy carrier, had an expected lifetime of 30 minutes. The description of the aircraft operations and communications is right on, and it is great hero stuff to have the hero fly an F14 on to a carrier deck. One cool sailor. This is a good story, that is hard to put down. It is as good as Tom Clancy (Hunt for Red October}or Stephen Coontz (Flight of the Intruder. The sequel should be a fantastic read also. Anyone who likes Clancy or Coontz should read this book by John Foster.

Edge of your seat Submarine Thriller!,
By W. H. McDonald Jr. "The American Author Assoc... (Elk Grove, CA USA) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)

There are an elite few who write great modern thrillers, such as Tom Clancy, Gayle Lynds, Joe Buff and Jeff Edwards just to name but a few of the great ones. But author John Foster is pushing to be included or at least noticed in that circle of creative power and energy. His submarine thriller "Fairbanks Risen" has a storyline that kicks butt with action, suspense, plot twists, great characters and good dialog. It has all the elements that could propel it into the public limelight if given some media attention and hype.
The story is riveting and makes this a difficult book to put down once you begin reading it. It is very powerful entertainment. The technical stuff in the book sounds like the real stuff. Being a former Army Huey guy I do not know the first thing about submarines or nuclear power or Navy warfare tactics. But that is the issue here--making it believable to readers like me. I have heard from people who should know these things and it rings true with their experiences as well. Put this book on your shopping list to buy and read. The Military Writer's Society of America gives this book their highest rating of FIVE STARS!

Story line/plot had great potential but I had several problems with the book. Grammar, spelling and punctuation were absolutely terrible and I got the feeling it was not professionally edited. Also, the main character in the book was made out to be almost super-human in his accomplishments, as to make it comical. One got the impression it was a story told by a 10 year old with a vivid imagination. To be honest, I stopped reading the book a third of the way into it. Over-all, it was just poorly written and over-the-top in it's naive portrayal of the main character.
