Book Description

May 10, 2011 A Saddler's Legacy Novel (Book 1)

Ann dreams of a marriage proposal from her poetic suitor, Eli—until Will Hanby shows her that nobility is more than fine words.

On a small farm in 19th-century Ohio, young Ann Miller is pursued by the gallant Eli Bowen, son of a prominent family. Eli is the suitor of Ann's dreams. Like her, he enjoys poetry and beautiful things and soon, he will move to the city to become a doctor.

Ann travels to Pittsburgh, accompanying her father on business. There she meets Will Hanby, a saddle-maker's apprentice. Will has spent years eking out an existence under a cruel master and his spirit is nearly broken. But Ann's compassion lights a long-dark part of his soul. Through his encounters with Ann's father, a master saddler, Will discovers new hope and courage in the midst of tremendous adversity.

When the Millers must return to Ohio and their ministry there, Will resolves to find them, at any cost. If Will can make it back to Ann, will she be waiting?

Review

Elliott gives the reader the gift of high quality historical fiction in the first Saddler's Legacy book. The suspense and romance will keep the reader immersed in the story. 4 & 1/2 stars. -- Romantic Times

This well-written historical series debut with a homespun feel is sure to please Lori Wick readers. -- Library Journal

Fairer than Morning is a moving Christian, romantic, and historical novel that starts up slowly, speeds ahead, and totally enraptures the reader with love of this well-told tale based on real people. --Historical Novels

From the Inside Flap

"A novelist to watch! Elliott excels at bringing a by-gone era to ilfe with all of its charm and its flaws. An unhesitating indictment of cruelty and a celebration of the freedom of spirit which can only be found in God." -Siri Mitchell

"Fairer than Morning is a fabulous debut! Rosslyn Elliott has not so much written a story, but crafted a tale with a dedication to depth and detail equal to that of the artisan she brings to life. With two very real people at its core, the story unfolds with characters and intrigue reminiscent of a Dickens novel, bringing the reader face-to-face with the heartbreak of bondage and the sweetness of freedom. Rosslyn Elliott is a welcome new voice, almost luxurious. Readers deserve this indulgence." -Allison Pittman

So often in the world of Christian fiction, books suffer from a frightful lack of true literary quality; it seems that many authors believe that throwing in a few references to God qualifies a story as Christian lit. I'm thrilled to discover a new author who understands that the best Christian fiction is that which not only gives us great pleasure through deep characters and beautiful prose, but challenges us and leaves us spiritually richer and stronger long after the last word is read.

In Fairer than Morning, the historic and spiritual aspects of the story are so intertwined that the reader can't doubt the depth of faith required by so many of those involved in the underground railroad. As in real life, there is darkness and evil; the story is true to history and accurately (sometimes brutally) portrays the time period. But Elliott's true gift is an amazing facility with language, allowing her to take these lesser known historical figures and round them into fully realized personalities. You will grow to love Ann and Will as they face and conquer their own weaknesses, and in the process, change the world around them. I can't wait to see what the future holds for these characters!

I bought my book--and it was worth every penny! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Something for everyone! April 16, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Rosslyn Elliott offers adventure, accurately-portrayed historical settings, romance, engaging characters, and beautifully-written prose in her debut novel "Fairer Than Morning". Both Ann and Will are charming and relatable. I couldn't help but sympathize with Will's plight while revisiting my late adolescence through the eyes of Ann, a sweet, strong young woman. The novel's real-life historical setting and characters add dimension to this fantastic novel. A most worthy read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Rich Historical Details April 16, 2011
Format:Paperback
Rosslyn Elliot weaves a gripping tale of love and forgiveness within a story rich with historical details. I was particularly fascinated by the inside look at what it was like to be bound over to someone as an apprentice. The main character, Will Hanby, was apprenticed to a saddle-maker. But this particular saddler ends up being a cruel and abusive man. Because of the terms of Will's apprentice and the strict laws binding him to his master, he has no hope of getting away until his years of service are completed. But events unfold that eventually push Will to have to make some serious choices about his future. I also liked getting a realistic picture of how the underground railroad worked for runaway slaves, as well as the kinds of people that opened their homes and risked their lives to help those bound by cruel masters.

This author offers a fresh voice in the historical romance genre. Readers will not only be transported to a different era, but they'll come away touched by a beautifully told story! I highly recommend!
