Ideal for a Fairy Party,

This is a lovely children's cookbook. Yes, it's fairly small, but it has 30 recipes--I wasn't expecting the Joy of Cooking for children or anything. My daughter wanted a fairy birthday party, and I used a number of the recipes--they were all delicious, and I saw more that we'll be trying in the future. I particularly liked the Magic Bonbon Cookies and the cupcakes decorated like mushrooms. What I also really like about the book is that you can have spring/summer or fall/winter themed recipes--nice, depending on what time of year your child's birthday is.
The recipes lean more heavily towards sweets, but there are savories in there as well. I think the book is especially appealing since kids love tiny food. The recipes would be fun to liven up an ordinary rainy-day tea party as well. I recommend this one and am planning to order the Mermaid one as well!

Disappointing cookbook, looks pretty but not much else,
This review is from: Fairies Cookbook (Spiral-bound)
This cookbook looks very cute, and the photographs are done well. However, it's not so much a COOK book as a Sandra Lee style use pre-made stuff and make it look different book.
The recipes in this book were not very impressive to me, and some of them looked like the food would be disgusting. The two recipes that the book actually has create abysmally small portions of the items. Why would I follow this books recipe and go through all the trouble of making hand made cupcakes, only to be able to make 6 cupcakes total. Yes 6. Same with the brownie recipe. Some of the recipes seemed really weird, like taking a cupcake, mixing ice cream with pink lemonade and then "frosting" the cupcake with the lemonade flavored ice cream. Uhh no thank you! Same with cutting TORTILLAS into snowflakes and then coating them with so much powdered sugar you can't tell it's a tortilla anymore. and lets not forget the "pink" hot chocolate. Basically it's melted white chocolate, which is really really bad for you, and food coloring, mixed with milk. The picture didn't even look pink! It's an unappetizing beige color. I'd rather just add food dye to regular hot cocoa, or use pink marshmallows. All in all this book is just okay. you can find just about all the recipes with better versions in other cookbooks. I suppose it has a creative think outside of the box thought process, but it wasn't really that unique seeming to me. I'm really really glad I checked this out of the library instead of wasting 10 dollars on it! Definitely look through it in a bookstore if you can, just to see if it's something you actually would want to own.

Looks Good, Tastes Bad!,

I ordered this cookbook for my daughter. The recipes look pretty, but every single recipe we made (we've made about 10) tastes horrible! I absolutely love to cook, but these recipes are terrible...this cookbook was quite disappointing. I would not recommend it.

All kinds of fairy treats!,
This review is from: Fairies Cookbook [FAIRIES CKBK] (Hardcover)
Fairies Cookbook written by Barbara Beery and published by Gibbs-Smith, includes recipes for five kinds of charming Fairy Parties. It has a lovely photo for each recipe and is filled with fun and creative ideas. The Sugarplum Fairy party has sweet delights like the Butterfly Fairy Masks made from sugar cookies that the children can decorate themselves in all kinds of magical ways with colored frosting, sprinkles and candies.
In the Garden Fairy section, I loved the adorable Fairy Garden Cottages which are little houses, the perfect size for fairies, created from a large muffin and graham crackers. Then they are decorated with flower candies, marshmallow stepping stones and more! The Fancy Pink Fairy Cocoa in the Rainbow Fairy section is made with heated milk mixed with white chocolate and cherry juice and topped with heart shaped marshmallows. Snowflake Fairies can eat treats like the Baked Snowflakes which are created by cutting designs into flour tortillas. Then you brush them with butter, bake and sprinkle with assorted sugars for a pretty sparkly effect. The Secret Fairy chapter has some fun recipes that would certainly be favorites of all types of fairies, like the delicately shaped Pixie Pancakes, healthy Tooth Fairy Treats and the Woodland Fairy Mushrooms -- chocolate cupcakes with red frosting and white chocolate chips dots. Fairies Cookbook is a perfect tool to assist you in planning your fairy party menu!

Beautiful But Completely Unhealthy Recipes,
By Grace G. (California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fairies Cookbook (Spiral-bound)
The pictures are lovely, the recipes are creative. However only one or two of the recipes are even remotely ok to feed to kids on a regular basis unless you want them to develop obesity and diabetes... very un-fairy like.
On a personal note, I'm a bit confused in general. Fairies are supposed to be lovely little nature creatures that live among flowers and mushrooms, drinking dew and wearing acorn tops for hats. How does one make the leap from such natural surroundings to a fairy cookbook made with refined sugar, chemical food colorings, and frostings, and candies, and maraschino cherries? I guess that was my big disappointment with this book. My daughter could only make a fairy recipe once in a great while because eating them all the time would be terrible for her. If the book had been creative like it was but in a tolerably less sugary way, I'm sure we'd have had little fairy meals much more often. And when getting rid of things, I did dump the book since we could only use it rarely for parties rather than for fun on a more regular basis. The idea was cute though.

Perfect first cookbook for your little one,
This review is from: Fairies Cookbook (Spiral-bound)
I bought this for my daughter when she was about 4. She's now 6 and still gets excited when we pull it out to make something. This is not a cookbook designed for grownups, so don't expect Betty Crocker. It's ideal to spark a child's interest in cooking from scratch (with a parent's help). It's simple yet creative, with large pictures and just the right amount of recipe options. Everything we've made so far tastes very good too. I love the pancake recipe especially. When I make pancakes, I always reach for the Pink Fairy Cookbook.
