Format: Hardcover
I first came across this book at my local library, and enjoyed it so much that I knew I had to order it.
The book, part of the Enchanted World series, is an overview of various types of fairies that are known. It has different sections, such as the history of the fairies, telling you about the Tuatha del D'Naan, the War Against the Humans, and the Departure of the Fairies, and then the book moves on to fairy legends and fairy tales that have been passed down through the years, all told in a third-person narrative, so it is very informative, but still enjoyable to read.
The various artwork used is absolutely gorgeous, with many different styles and artists.
This book is a must-have for any fairy lore lover.

This book does a nice job of combining illustrations, general facts, short folk tales, and longer tales. Though it provides a great number of examples of fairy and elf tales from around the world (mostly European, of course) it does NOT provide useful tables or lists of names for similar creatures. Also, the book does not give meaningful overviews or summaries comparing and contrasting tales from different cultures.
It's part of a beautiful series from Time-Life books but is not a complete reference source.

The entire Time-Life "Enchanted World" series has beautiful illustrations and fascinating stories which are skillfully retold, with plenty of details and a style that shifts to suit each tale. These are stories, not the summaries most "encylopedia of" books use. The Fairies/Elves book, like the Ghosts, Dwarves, Dragons, Spells, etc ones, is enjoyable and informative, and I own/recommend them all. I was thrilled to find the missing volume on Amazon and, though used, the copy was in good condition. The best part is many of the stories are ones I've never found anywhere else or only seen as a one-liner mention. However, as one Amazon reviewer points out, Fairies/Elves is NOT a reference book. The bibliography is extensive, but there's no way of knowing which story matches which source and no footnotes to explain where factual information (ie, translation of a foreign/fairy name) comes from. I especially wish the pictures had an artist/date caption, because the editors used actual illustrations from the original sources (medieval manuscripts, pre-Raphaelite paiintngs, etc), so identification is important.

I fell in love with this series while I was in Jr. High. It's a magical set geared toward those who are fascinated with myth, folklore, and story-telling. The book is filled with fascinating stories and delightfull imagery. Some of the volumes I cherish dearly, such as Fairies and Elves, Night Creatures, Ghosts, and Water Spirits. Others are merely okay. Unfortunately the set has begun to disappear from libraries. If you are a lover of myth, folklore, and story-telling then grab this set before it's gone.

I had never seen this book before but decided to buy it anyway. I am glad I did. The pictures are beautiful but most importantly the stories are fantastic. I would reccomend this book to anyone with a love of fairy tales I would also reccomend buying the rest of the series which can also be found on Amazon.
