This review is from: Fairy Tale Knits: 32 Projects to Knit Happily Ever After (Hardcover)
Every child has fantasies of being a queen, a princess, Robin Hood or maybe a pirate. Every child loves Fairy Tales or fantasies of one type or another. If you are a knitter, this book can make a child's dream come true. Like the title says, the book is filled with Fairy Tale Knits.
The very first project is a sky blue Snow Queen Coat that any little girl would love. It has a lovely lace pattern and clear instructions. It even comes with a little knit capelet and hand muff. The Little Red Riding Hood cape in red is perfect for the girl in your life. It is knit with a relatively simple lace pattern. There are several elf designs including slippers and stockings for anyone who loves to felt. The Magic Carpet is adorable and can take your child to any destination of his dreams. It is knit in a colorful blue and green striped pattern with multi-colored triangle embellishments on the border. There are several pirate outfits for the guys, complete with skulls and crossbones. There's also a wonderful green Robin Hood jacket. I like that the book is balanced for gender - - outfits for both boys and girls. There are crowns galore - - for princes, princesses, kings and queens. These are a bit easier to knit than some of the other projects in the book. There's a technique section that shows the various techniques and abbreviations used in the book. I like that the instructions are written out and not charted. I'm not a chart person. This is a whimsical and lovely book. The costumes can be knit for Halloween, a birthday surprise or just because you want to give something special to a child you love.

A Fairy Tale Indeed!,

This review is from: Fairy Tale Knits: 32 Projects to Knit Happily Ever After (Hardcover)
I'm a mom of 2 princes, and I can't describe how excited I get when I see great knitting designs out there for boys! This book is jam packed full of sweetness and whimsy, for boys AND girls. The design and layout is all in theme, and my 2 year old loves "reading" this book.
I love the designer's seamless approach to these projects. There is a fun mix of the faster knitting designs, such as the "Elves" slippers and holiday stocking, or the "Crowns" and then full garments like "Hansel & Gretel." Many of the designs include multiple pieces as well, to make the full outfit. Although these designs are based in the fantastic, I love the wearability of them all! These aren't just for dress up! Pattern instructions are laid out very clearly along with schematics and loads of great pictures to help you see how your project is going. The technique section in the back of the book is very complete, and includes a huge list of abbreviations. There is also an index which I personally really appreciate. Alison Stewart-Guinee is obviously a seriously talented and creative designer and I will be keeping tabs on her! Now my only problem is deciding which project to cast on first!

A Fabulous Pattern Book,
By Nikki Kirkwood "stitchtacsew" (Dallas, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fairy Tale Knits: 32 Projects to Knit Happily Ever After (Hardcover)
A friend gifted this charming pattern book to me a month ago, not knowing it had been on my Amazon.com wish list for ages! Fairy Tale Knits is a delightful pattern book for child and baby knitwear following a whimsical yet wearable theme. The 32 patterns (that's only $0.78 a pattern if you pay full retail price) cover everything from long winter coats, to clever summer dresses and every accessory in between.
Beyond the stories of Cinderella and The Little Mermaid we find Pirates and Knights in Armor as well as a crown for every Little King or Queen. Most all of the pattern construction is in one piece, a method I find simplifies as well as speeds up stitching. Author Stewart-Guinee also includes instructions to knit the garments in pieces for those who love to seam their work. Beautifully photographed the book offers a range of skill levels and the concept of fairy tales adapted to these patterns is just as easily removed to create classic, non-thematic garments. Standout patterns are the Red Riding Hood (hooded cape) and Modern Chain Mail sweater. Both of these patterns are completely cute and completely functional. This is a straight forward pattern book including a small introduction and a glossary of terms in the back. Ideal for any level knitter. stitchtacsew.com - crafty adventures in the world of fiber
