5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful New Pictures for An Old Favorite
This story of a lovely fairy's marketing day was originally published in 1918. This book's bright detailed pictures are a wonderful glimpse into fairyland. As the fairy indulges herself with thrilling purchases she remembers to treat all creatures with kindness. The fauna and flora in this book are beautifully detailed and the realistic snow-drops, bleeding hearts,...

3.0 out of 5 stars Very pleasant
Very nice story and message but meaning is lost on my 4 year old. The illustrations too are pleasant but not as captivating as I had hoped for. Even at this young age, my daughter is looking for a story with strongly defined characters and some type of climax and resolution. The message is a good one, but punch!

5.0 out of 5 stars So beautiful it will bring a tear to your eye!, August 17, 2004
This review is from: A Fairy Went a-Marketing (Unicorn) (Paperback)
I can sum up this book in one word--exquisite!

Whilst there aren't actually a lot of words in it, every picture is definitely worth a thousand of them. What text there is, however, is poetic, poignant and full of worthy lessons for children about how rewarding looking after animals and nature can be, without being at all preachy. Tying in beautifully with those words, Jamichael Henterly's lush illustrations are some of the best I've ever seen--this illustrator's attention to detail will keep you looking at those pictures for hours, finding new and wonderful things all the while.

This may be a book for small children, but even if you don't have a child, read it anyway! It's like comfort food for the soul.

This gentle rhyming story is paired with beautiful illustrations. Story of the seasons and about being a compassionate person. A must-have in your library- especially if you love fairies!

5.0 out of 5 stars We're on our second book..., March 12, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: A Fairy Went a-Marketing (Unicorn) (Paperback)
We read our first copy so many times it became extremely worn, especially when the little ones would look at the book themselves. So, we purchased another copy that remains on mom's shelf for safekeeping--one that will be returned to when the kids are grown up and have children of their own.

This book appeals to children because of the delightful pictures that are so detailed they draw you into the story itself. Children are naturally drawn to nature, so this short book, which features a different season for each verse and is loaded with close-ups of animals, is particularly attractive to young children. Older children will like just looking at the pictures.

I would recommend buying this book just for the illustrations.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Charming Fairy Story, July 18, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: A Fairy Went a-Marketing (Unicorn) (Paperback)
This book is charmingly written and beautifully illustrated. The pictures themselves are worth purchasing the book. My daughter originally checked this book out from the local library, and was so sad when we eventually returned it that I had to purchase it for her. It is a favorite bedtime story, with a terrific message about taking care of the earth and all its creatures. In face, my kids love this book so much that out of the hundreds of kids books we own, this one is read several times a week at bedtime.

Both my 4-year-old and 1-year-old enjoy this simple, moving story about a kindly fairy. Henterly's illustrations are magnificent.

This story is an old one as you may know. the Illustrations in this book brings this story to life. I used to read this to my niece and my little sister when they were young. I read it to them so much, I knew it word for word. A lot of the times people would get annoyed with this...but I never got tired of this cute story.
I would definately recommend this book!

There is not another book around with illustrations that compare to A Fairy Went A-Marketing. An adult friend gave it to me a few years ago and it's now a favorite of my three old daughter as well. The message is sweet; the illustrations are unmatched. I keep a copy or two on hand for "out of the blue gift giving". I hope you find it as special as I do.
