4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book for A Read Aloud
This is a beatiful book, full of gorgeous drawings, fold outs, and removable tidbits. My 9 year old boy loves it. I imagine that a girl would love it even more, as it is a bit feminine.

The story is great, a lady watches her friends house and gardens over an extended time and slowly becomes aware of the fairies that live there.

3.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful but disappointing - hard to read font!
I was very excited to receive this book for my daughter as she and my son both love the "ology" books.

The illustrations are beautiful - they remind me of vintage cards, and there are a lot of interactive things on each page (just like the "ology" books).

However, this book is really only good to look at. The writing is in illegible cursive - I...

Along with the fanciful fairy tales and beatiful art, there are real facts strewn through the book about things such as plants and butterflies.

The one potential problem with the book is that it is written in a tiny cursive that even I, an experienced nurse used to reading doctor's writing, have had problems with in a spot or two. My son could not read it at all even though he knows cursive. I had to read it aloud to him.

It is an excellent read aloud for good quality time, and it has high entertainment value and a bit of educational value as well.

I'd give it a 5 for content, but because of the writing - which does add to the artistic look of the book but detracts from a child's autonomy in enjoyment, I'm giving it a 4 instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique, June 15, 2006
This review is from: Fairyopolis: A Flower Fairies Journal (Hardcover)
I received this book from my Grandson for my 65th birthday !!
Yes this book is for adults too who love fairies. It's the most gorgeous book and interesting format I've seen. A pretty jewel on the cover starts you on your way through a fairy adventure with beautiful art work. There are many envelopes and special additions inside to explore. You will want to buy this for friends so they can share in the fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful, Beautiful, Magical, Book, July 13, 2006
This review is from: Fairyopolis: A Flower Fairies Journal (Hardcover)
If you're looking for a fantastic gift for a fairy lover that you know... Look no further, this is it...

Fairyopolis is a beautiful, exquisitely detailed, magical book... In the guise of a lovingly kept journal, detailing the wondrous summer that Miss Cicely Mary Barker (the illustrator who created the famous Flower Fairies) spent as a caretaker at a friend's house in the country...

It chronicles her encounters, her musings and the development of her friendship with the fairies... Intertwined with facts and folklore and maps and wee little hidden bits of fairy relics hidden under postcards and photos, leaving the reader feeling as though they've just paged through the scrapbook of an amazing friend...

If this book has a shortcoming, it lies with the script that is used throughout the book, there were moments when I had to pause and reread passages but that may very have been the dyslexia talking...

And of course, it must be said that if this is your first encounter with "The Ologies," you should do yourself a favor and check out all the others, they're just as wonderful...

5.0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE, December 30, 2006
This review is from: Fairyopolis: A Flower Fairies Journal (Hardcover)
hey. I'm 13 and I ordered this last year. it's so cute and imaginative. It is about a woman who stays at her friends house. She then later discovers faries. The book explains how to track faries, what they look like, and other mythical creatures. The book is pretty big (about 12inches length and 10 width) The book includes pretty paintings of faries, little booklets you can open, pockets with surprises, and a method to make blackberry jam :) yum. I'd recomend it to girls 8+

This book is just as enchanting, as the Dragonology, and Wizardology books, if not more. It is for people of all ages, and if you weren't interested in fairies before, you are now.
The book is full of the whimsical fairy images and details of fairy encounters by the artist, Cicely Mary Barker. You will also find many surprises in this book, such as letters, postcards, fairy dust, and even a gift from the fairies at the end.
It seems that this book is aimed more for children, but is most definitely something an adult will enjoy, whether they are reading it to their child or reading it alone.
You or your child will be drawn into the wonders of this book. The fairies are child-like, dressed in leaves and flowers. There are many things hidden in this book, to find. The book brings another world to you or your child, and will no doubt, allow your child's imagination to grow, and yours to grow with it. I don't know if this would be the perfect gift for young children. Try to imagine what they would do to a pop-up book before you give this as a gift.
I hope authors and artists keep coming out with more books like this one. It brings a new excitement to reading and art, which is something that everyone can learn to appreciate.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK FOR 10+, January 1, 2007
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Fairyopolis: A Flower Fairies Journal (Hardcover)
I got this book for Christmas along with Pirateology. I also have Wizardology, Dragonology, and A Wandmaker's Guidebook. Fairyopolis is just as good as all these books, it may indeed be the best. The cover artwork and color is absolutly amazing, I spend minutes just looking at it. One thing i noticed was on the back it said it was rated for children 6+. I read someone's review about how her son and daughter love the ology books, and she was dissapointed because the whole book was in cursive! Now I am 11, so I can read cursive, but I think the book should be rated 10+, so I strongly advise not to buy this book if you have a child who cannot read cursive, unless you plan on reading it to them, don't buy iy; wait till there a little older. other then that, the concept is great for little kids because the women in the story is very realistic. the book involves a women at her friends house, and it has little hidden treasures in the envolopes, and the last treasure at the end of the book will be enjoyed by all ages!

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice book, August 30, 2006
This review is from: Fairyopolis: A Flower Fairies Journal (Hardcover)
It is a very nice book, although small and simple.
I believe it would be a beautiful gift for small girls and boys, because it is very easy to read and has little pop-ops and things to open and investigate.
I think for fairy lovers it is a nice book to see, but not much information.
In general very nice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fairy Fun In A Gorgeous Package, January 19, 2007
This review is from: Fairyopolis: A Flower Fairies Journal (Hardcover)
My mom sent me this book as a gift. I had never even heard of it! But I am very familiar with Cicely Mary Barker's Flower Fairies, which appear throughout the book. The story is an interesting account of CMB's stay in Bartons, Sussex in 1920. She slowly becomes aware of fairies living on the grounds while she is house-sitting. The book is beautiful, with silver ink and a gem on the cover, and many lift-up and pull-out notes, maps, booklets, etc. with information on fairies. It is fun to read, especially with a child old enough not to tear it, and has enough to it to keep adults entertained. The cursive writing is a little difficult to read. It really does have the feel of a scrap-book and I've read it over many times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating, June 10, 2007
This review is from: Fairyopolis: A Flower Fairies Journal (Hardcover)
All I have to say is this:

1. I presented this book to two birthdays girls at their 6th birthday party.

2. Shortly thereafter 25 little boys and girls forgot all the other toys and games on offer.

3. Shortly after that their father had to wade into a crowd of kindergarteners and rescue the book from 50 little cake-smeared hands all trying to explore its pages.

4. I heard no fewer than four kids ask their parents for their own copies of "purple fairy book."
