5.0 out of 5 stars makes so much sense, December 23, 2009
This review is from: Fairytale Of New York (MP3 Download)
Simply put, this cover just makes so much sense. A brilliant, inventive and attitude-filled Canadian indie band covering the brash and rough Pogues. I get it.

The song really feels like they chose it because they loved the tune and wanted to do it service. Torquil Campbell doesn't do a Shane McGowan interpretation, and that's for the better. Amy Millan's voice compliments his perfectly. It's pretty and emotional, but edgy and powerful like all of the band's repertoire. It's not as raw as the original and it's more polished, but that's what makes it a Stars song.

Stars bring an understanding to the material that I haven't seen in any of the (many) other covers of Fairtytale of New York. The sharp edge remains. You can tell they truly respect the song. When Torq gets to the emotional climax of the song about sharing their dreams, you really feel it.

This may very well be my favourite version of any Christmas song out there. It's just that good.
