2.0 out of 5 stars lackluster love stories
The title of the book instantly got my eye and I excitedly ordered a copy.

However since starting on page 1, I have been disappointed.

The story lines are not interesting, the mysticism and fantasy worlds that are created that I assume are supposed to be the same as in children's fairytales just don't ring true to me. Maybe there is not enough...

"Fairytales for femmes" is an adequate title for a charming collection of seven short stories about women looking for love and getting it at the end in spite of the diverse obstacles that they encounter on their paths.

In "The Love of my Life", an unhappy heiress is looking for the ultimate sexual experience in order to repress the memories of a cruel and unhappy childhood.
In "The Event", Vilja, a young woman from another galaxy, is passionately in love with the female ruler of a patriarchal colony. She puts her life at stake by replacing her brother and participating in a cruel Event in order to be close to her beloved.
In "Pink Magic", the self-confident young woman, Mona, is secretly in love with her best friend, Selebrity, but finds it very difficult to reveal her feelings.
In "The Beholder", the god child of a goddess and the patient at a psychiatric clinic, She-Hera Zade, is in love with her psychiatrist.
In "One Ticket to Always", Raven has been many years in love with her brother's wife.
In "Date night, right?", Dwynwen, a dog lover, falls in love with the famous writer, Mayona Naess, at a reading.
In "The Harmony of the Spheres", a single mother responsible of both her child and her own mother, realizes that she is worthy of love.
The themes are very well-constructed and beautifully-treated. The author is very skilled at setting the scenes, establishing the characters and exploring the dynamics of the different relations. The chemistry between the main characters is also very believable and palpable. The various illustrations are enchanting and fit the magic of the stories.
The readers will be drawn in by the touching romances, the vivid and believable characters, the emotional struggles, the twists and turns and the happy and satisfying endings.
This is a very inspiring and uplifting read and I strongly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful, impressive, and highly entertaining collection of modern romantic fairy tales, September 20, 2009

This review is from: Fairytales for Femmes (Paperback)
The beautiful cover was what initially caught my attention and the title definitely added to my curiosity-
Now I am glad I decided to get this little book filled with wisdom, humor and passion.

It must be said, L.Holm is a gifted writer, with a wonderful sense of humor, and a keen sense of detail. Not only did I cry (once) but smiled a lot. Some parts read like poetry.

All seven stories are different thematically; some are very "dark" (The Beholder, Harmony of the Spheres), or sad
(The Love of My Life, One Way Ticket to Always) while others are light, almost picaresque (Pink Magic, Date night, right?). As in the tradition of fairy tales they all in their own way reflect life and love and the obstacles -and sometimes fears- a woman has to confront, as in this case, when she falls in love with another woman.

The characters are different women from different walks of life, with different backgrounds and hang-ups, but the message is that love will find its way in the end. This might take a while, though, and there will be many obstacles along the way. But love will prevail.

And this is one of many reasons why I will return to this charming little book and recommend to my friends.

This is a wonderful collection of short stories that I enjoyed savoring. From first encounters to deepening relations, the emotions are complex, the women are romantic and passionate and the scenarios are different from each other. The stories are sexy and emotional, and they held my attention. I'll be looking forward to reading more.

As can be expected from the playful title; "Fairytales for Femmes" is a collection of romantic short stories with happy endings for women who love women.

Some of the fairy tales are cruel, some are sad and others fun, or mysterious. They all have one thing in common; the girl gets the girl in the end when all the obstacles, fears and modern dragons have been faced, fought and conquered.

This being said, none of the stories are simple; they are all as multilayered and complex as the protagonists and their objects of affections. The heroines come in all shapes and conditions, and from all walks of life and society, and no matter if they come across to the reader as sexy or shy, innocent or experienced; most of them will turn out to have been more than a little bruised by life and love.

This is a wonderful collection of stories and I enjoyed them all very much!

This review is from: Fairytales for Femmes (Paperback)
I enjoyed very much this exquisite collection of short stories. The writing is modern, exciting, romantic and passionate. Some stories are very intense and psychological and others are playful and sexy. All are exquisite. Definitely a page-turner! I highly recommend it!

Maybe there is not enough background information or maybe its just too fantastical for my liking.

And there are too many typos getting in the way of my reading.

I unfortunately have not enjoyed any of the stories.
