5.0 out of 5 stars This is so freakin awesome!

I just got 28 new cd's, all power metal. Bands like Rhapsody,Edguy,Gamma Ray,Hammerfall,Lunatica,Aquaria,Epica & Rob Rock. This Skylark cd is my favorite out of all of them! "Lions Are the World" is my favorite song PERIOD! Get this cd if you like metal similar to Nightwish & Visions Of Atlantis. This thing ROCKS!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars skylark are truly one of the best symphonic epic power metal bands around today and this cd prove it., November 5, 2006
This review is from: Fairytales (Audio CD)
hello fellow metallians. if you love symphonic power metal, true metal, or just any kind of power metal the you should not overlook this band. skylark have been around over a decade and have proven themselves time and time again to be right up there with the best of them. skylark are comparible and similar to acts such as rhapsody, laybrinth, symphony x,secret sphere, heavenly, galloglass, domain, and other symphonic acts i forgot to mention. however they are not copies or clones of either of these bands. skylark are a very unique and original band. they have a sound all their own, that makes their style all their own, if any thing there are metal bands that are copying them. the singer here is amazing. he has so much range and potential. his sound is comparible to rob tyrant of laybrinth. and the guitarist is simply amazing. he can play so well that i truly believe he is almost or is just as good as luca turilli or olaf thorsen. the metal here is great. the music is beautiful and soothing and at the same time its heavy and metal all the way. with fast paced slaying and beautiful guitar playing sort of like speed metal blended with symphonics, and when combined with the awesome vocals and galloping drums skylark are sure to please fans of power metal and traditional metal alike. also the artwork is probably the best of any band. all of skylark's albums have some of the most amazing art work i have ever seen. on the cd the gates of heaven rob tyrant and olaf thorsen of laybrinth lend their support in the song writing process and also lend their talents as well. with guest vocals and guitars from laybrinth members you can get a sense of the style of skylark, the divine gates series was truly great. i can't tell you where to start if you are just getting into skylark but i can tell you that it dont matter where you start cause each of their cd;s are masterpieces in their own right and each stands out as epic masterpieces. with so many amazing power metal bands around today skylark has truly been an inspiration to many of them. your friend and brother in metal, brandon whitson

3.0 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars - Skylark's new direction, May 13, 2011
This review is from: Fairytales (Audio CD)
Originally released in 2005, Fairytales is the seventh studio album from Italian power metal band Skylark. The band, best known for its conceptual releases and Luis Royo cover artwork, shook things up quite a bit for this album, bringing in a female vocalist (Kiara) in an attempt to reach beyond the typical power metal audience and appeal to fans of Nightwish, Within Temptation, Edenbridge and the like.

Fairytales may be very different in terms of vocals, but for the most part this is a fairly typical Skylark album. It's a Helloween-inspired melodic power metal album with speedy guitar work and intricate keyboards, plus a pair of lengthy epic tracks (the 8-minute "Mt. Fuji" and the 11-minute "Lions are the World.") Kiara isn't the strongest singer around, but her voice suits Skylark's overall sound pretty well. She's outstanding on "Lions," which really utilizes her range. Another highlight is the cover of Mike Oldfield's "Moonlight Shadow," which was also covered in a similar manner by Marenne.

While it is something of a breath of fresh air for Skylark, I don't think Fairtytales rises to the level of truly great in either the power metal or female-fronted metal worlds. If you're a fan of the band it's well worth checking out. If you're a fan of any of the bands mentioned earlier and looking for something new, you could do a lot worse than this album.

Edition Notes: Renaissance Records released Fairytales domestically in 2008, giving it new (less attractive) cover artwork and adding a bonus track in the form of a cover of Stratovarius's classic "Forever." This is actually one of the best songs on the album.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the Skylark I was expecting, March 31, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Fairytales (Audio CD)
I loved the Skylark album from the 70's with "Wildflower" and thought that they had regrouped for new albums. Upon my first listening, I quickly realized this is not the same band, so my first listening was somewhat skewed. This album is not terrible, but not anything that I would highly recommend either.
