Book Description

May 19, 2005
An exploration of the major wars in U.S. history as seen through the religious faith of the men and women serving in the military.

Since men and women in battle not only face the prospect of their own deaths but also must fashion a moral rationale for killing, the battlefield is often a place of tremendous religious transformation.

Do men and women at war revert to the faith of their youth or do they gravitate to the spirituality around them? Do they lose all faith in the face of horror, or do they piece together an informal faith that simply gets them through the fight? Are they better warriors and do they experience less post-traumatic stress if they believe their war is righteous and that they are agents of good? These are the questions Stephen Mansfield addresses in The Faith of the American Soldier.

The book opens with the core question which lies at the heart of the matter: what happens religiously to America's warriors when they go to battle, and what impact does this have on the nation's conduct of war? Mansfield surveys America's wars from a theological perspective in order to understand the theological framing and religious rationale for each, where they came from, and what effect they had on behavior on the battlefield.

Mansfield examines the religious nature of the warrior ethic today. There is a new generation on the battlefield now, one raised with less religious training and less connection to history than any that has come before. Soldiers are left to their own religious choices to frame their moral perspectives on war, on killing, and on the possibility of death. Mansfield explores these choices through the lens of his deep respect for the military-he comes from a long line of U.S. Army officers-and from his background as a Ph.D. in American history, and his more than twenty years' experience as a pastor.

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Stephen Mansfield is the author of numerous books on history and leadership, including The Faith of George W. Bush, a New York Times bestseller.

From AudioFile

The expression "There are no atheists in foxholes" appears to be true, according to military historians. Nonetheless, the warriors in the latest conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan appear to be among the most religious in any American war since the Civil War. Stephen Mansfield portrays this latest generation in battle, using specific people to demonstrate his concepts. Phil Gigante is solid as the narrator, offering an appropriate military crispness to his reading without sounding affected. However, the decision to include complete footnotes after each quotation seriously detracts from the flow of the narrative. 5.0 out of 5 stars No Athiests in Foxholes?, May 31, 2005
This review is from: The Faith of the American Soldier (Hardcover)
Mansfield is a historian by training, a Christian by conviction, and wordsmith by gifting. In "Faith of the American Soldier" he combines these to produce an engrossing and thought-provoking collection of personal war time accounts. It's beautifully written while providing gut-wrenching glimpses into the ways battle affects the human soul. An amazing book. Parts of it will stay with me for a long, long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book for Every Parent, August 15, 2005
This review is from: The Faith of the American Soldier (Hardcover)
"The Faith of the American Soldier" is an excellent description of the search for spirituality by today's young adults! Although the author uses American service people as the basis of his analysis, the "search for spirituality" by all young adults is very similar. The non-military personell do not necessarily have the crises thrust upon them like the military, but the search is the same. I have recommended the book to my two children who have sons in the military. I also plan to give my copy to our pastor as I believe he will find it useful in understanding and dealing with young adults.

5.0 out of 5 stars God is not dead, March 10, 2007

(REAL NAME)
Stephen Mansfield's work provides a series of interviews with Jewish, Christian, Muslim and Buddhist believers, who are not only young, arguably the so-called Generation X, but also serving in Iraq. What he uncovers is that while many of today's youth, very possibly those who are not in foxholes, but in college in the US as well, are disenchanted with many of the institutionalized forms of religion and the failings of those religions. However, these young people are still seeking and finding faith. Mansfield's work is not simply religious, but creates a cultural picture of today's newest generation in their 20s having a real desire for ethic, moral and spiritual direction. Many of the individual anecdotes are powerful. And the book overall inspires me with a sense of pride and admiration and hope for the next generation of Americans. This book in many ways is the counter point to much of writing saying we have lost our ethos and have embraced materialism too enthusiastically. Mansfield is able to show that not only are their no atheists in fox holes, but more importantly that these young people do not believe blindly, but search their souls seeking universal and eternal truths.
It's an educational, enlightening and inspiring work. I highly commend it to you.
