Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Prolific author Copeland (With This Ring, LJ 2/1/98) kicks off another historical Western series with this pleasing tale of mail-order brides set in 1872. When their pastor father dies suddenly, leaving little money, three sisters realize that they need to take drastic action to survive. Each answers a newspaper ad soliciting Christian brides. Faith goes to Texas, where her intended, a well-to-do rancher named Nicholas Shepherd, seems to be having second thoughts. While her wedding is repeatedly postponed, Faith meets a local widower and decides to teach his blind son Braille. In time, Nicholas begins to realize that he may have lost Faith to another man. Although this is not the freshest premise, Copeland endows his characters with enough liveliness to make the book a fun light read. Recommended, especially for Copeland's growing group of fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars A sweet, lighthearted mail order bride story, March 15, 2002

This review is from: Faith (Brides of the West #1) (HeartQuest) (Paperback)
Faith 19, and her two younger sisters have decided to become mail order brides in order to relieve their aunt of any more expense on their behalf. Faith's adventure has her answering an ad to become the bride of wealthy Nicholas Shepherd in his mid thirties. He resides in Deliverance, TX with his mother. Liza.

Faith's unusual arrival in Deliverance is only the beginning of some rather bizarre occurances which prevent the wedding from taking place several times. Instead, Faith tests the patience of Liza her future mother in law by preferring outside, tomboy activities to domestication. Faith cannot figure out what makes this man and his mother tick, since they seem to have plenty of money but refuse to spend it, and although they are rich and well known, they still do not seem very happy with life.

As Faith becomes acquainted with the townspeople and church folks, she is especially fond of little five year old Adam, who is blind. His father, Dan, is a young widow with two other children. Since Faith is not married yet, she feels free to help Dan out with the children. This act of kindness causes her great distress from Liza and distrust and jealousy from Nicholas.

Although the book introduces many different families, it centers on Faith's adventures as she seeks to establish her worth while wondering if her marriage is ever going to take place. The one single obstacle she cannot overcome is the selfish, moody, controlling mother of her fiance. Liza is a widow who now refuses to relinquish her hold on her only child, Nicholas.

Nicholas puts his work and his cattle ranch above anything else, and postpones the wedding once more to prevent leaving a young bride home alone while he is out on a cattle drive. It is during his absence that Faith pursues her dream to start a school for the blind since she cares so deeply for little Adam and wants to teach him to read. Liza does NOT share this dream and in a very ugly scene, she issues an untimatum to Faith that leads to dire consequences. When Nicholas returns, he is shocked, sad and angry.

The end result is worth the read, and I am anxious to get to book two in this series, Brides of the West.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dynamic!, December 3, 2002
This review is from: Faith (Brides of the West #1) (HeartQuest) (Paperback)
I have very little time to read and this book I read in 2 days! The way Lori Copeland wrote this book, you feel like you are standing right there in Deliverence, Texas looking at the whole scene. I felt captivated by the all of the characters. When they experienced joy or sorrow, I also felt it. While reading this book you will cry alot. Mostly because you are laughing so hard! "Faith" is a perfect title to this book. The main character, who is Faith, has the most innocent faith in God. Almost a child's faith. We all need to experience that. I have already recommended this book to friends and want everyone to know, this book is well worth your time to read it! You will walk away feeling refreshed and joyful! God Bless!

5.0 out of 5 stars Faith is one of the best historical romance books I've read., November 4, 1999

It is a hilarious story that had me rolling with laughter one minute and crying the next. Faith, being the first mail order bride in this series set in the 1800's, realized that God works everything out to the good for those who love Him.
