A Classic,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Faith Explained (Paperback)
This book is constantly reprinted and it's no wonder. We first used it in an (authentic) high school CCD program in the mid- 1970's. Its simple, straightforward style, depth and clarity have me coming back to it every 4 years or so for a "refresher" on the basics of the Roman Catholic faith. This book is a must for anyone who wants to know why he exists, where he is going, who God is, etc., in addition to the nuts and bolts of Mother Church. I read a lot in this area--in addition to apologetics and all the usual suspects in that area and this book is a stand out and has stood the test of time. I'm ordering more because I'm always giving them away to all sorts of people and I never get "negative" feedback--it's always completely positive. A very readable book!

wonderful gift,

This review is from: Faith Explained (Paperback)
My family received this book as a gift & I'm so glad I had the chance to read it. Like SO MANY Catholics, the past several years, I've only gone to Church on Christmas & Easter.Although I was born & raised a Catholic, & attended Catholic school, after a few years past I seem to have forgotten "how to be" a Catholic. Sadly, I even admitted that I didn't know what it meant to be Catholic. This book has answered so many questions I had (similar to all the questions most Catholics have), & in every sense, my "faith was explained"... & finally, I understand what it means to be Catholic & I'm able to take a better & stronger stand concerning my beliefs. A MUST READ FOR EVERYONE--even those who attend church regularly!

Very easy to understand and will answer numerous questions regarding Catholic faith. It should be required reading for all believers of the Bible, for it explains it in an easier way, leaving no room for speculations or assumptions. Highly recommended...

Fantastic book especially for Catholic Christians.,

This is a hard one to put down. So many Catholics have received such a limited formation in the knowledge of their faith. I feel I have been one of them up till recently, even though I went through Catholic grade school and high-school and I've been practicing all my life. So many little theological questions are discussed and explained in brief and engaging ways in this book. It's an excellent supplement to the Catechism and the Bible especially for Catholic Christians today in America.

Perfect for Students,

I'm a senior at a Catholic high school and The Faith Explained contained a wealth of information on just about any Catholic research topic. My Works Sited pages always contained this book. Aside from that, the book is amazingly interesting! It simplifies (not dumb down) difficult issues and elaborates on them with vivid colorful examples. You won't put it down! I'm on my second time through - and I'm done with my research!

One of the best in shedding light on the Catholic Faith,

It's the first book I recommend to someone who wants to learn the Catholic or Christian faith. It takes complicated subjects and brings them down to a level anyone can understand. It does this without diluting the subject in any way. I also keep a copy of it next to my bed for quick reference. It also is a fabulous book for the post-Vatican II'ers who never really had great catechism growing up. If I was stuck on a deserted island this would be one of 4 or 5 books I'd want to have with me.

Love it.,

I'm still reading it now, and I absolutely love it. Complex Catholic ideas are put into simple sentences which make it easy to understand and follow. However, I feel the reader should only take in little by little because each page is full of many concepts to think about and reflect. I try about 6 pages every night, therefore I'm progressing, but also absorbing.
I highly suggest all Catholics read this book for a higher understand of their Faith, or to learn why the Church advises certain things. I feel like many Catholics (like myself) try to follow the Faith without having it very well understood, this book helps not only make the Faith clearer for yourself, but also helps allow you to explain it to others. I have 2 copies, so I let my boyfriend borrow one, he ended up buying his own, so I lent it to my cousin who's reading it. However she finds it rather difficult to follow, because like I said it's rich with many concepts into just a few pages. Then my mom asked to borrow it, and so did my 14 year old sister, so I think a lot of people would be interested in reading this book.

+The Faith Explained [Very Well],

When I was given this book I thought there was no way an author could explain the Christian faith very well in a single book of this size. Then I read the first few pages, and the language was non-academic and easy to understand, so I thought there's REALLY no way the author could do a decent job expaining the faith. But the Holy Spirit works in mysterious ways! This book works through biblical text and gives creative analogies, making the often hard-to-understand mysteries of the Catholic faith reachable for a layman like myself. If you want to understand the Catholic faith, READ THIS BOOK!

after reading all the previous reviews, the unanimity is very obvious. this is a "great" book! superficially, it's easy to underestimate this book because the title is so trivial and the book is so small (you wonder how can it contain so much) until you read the first few pages. this is the first book i read since my renewal to the Faith (4 years ago) and until now, i still read portions of it to remind myself how exciting and alive the Faith is. this book is hard to find but get it, read it, cherish it, share it, practice it and finally, treasure it! God bless.

Sophisticated in simplicity and clarity...,

This review is from: The Faith Explained (Paperback)
I've owned this book now for about 3 years and have read it through all the way, once. I've gone back to sections for refresher information, many, many times. What I like the most about this book is, if you do not have the capacity (time, or stamina) to read the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) all the way through - this is an excellent way to get "more than the basics" of what is in the CCC in a very clear, concise manner.
From the very first page (just like all catechisms of the Catholic church) it starts with the three fundamental questions. Who made me? Who is God? Why did God make me? Just that first page will have you hooked and you will not want to put it down. I constantly recommend this book to anyone over the age of 13 because it is that clear in it's method of explaining the faith. I do not believe this book is for anyone looking for a "dumbed down" version of the faith, and by that I do not mean there is anything wrong with the book written by Fr. Tregilio called "Catholicism for Dummies." Quiet the contrary, these two books are just for different types of readers. Another interesting observation on this book is the different kind of people that love it. I have met such different personalities and ages of people (13 to 79) who love this book that I think that fact is also a recommendation of the book. Read it, it's good for answering all your questions AND will untangle any misconceptions you have developed along the way, or just remind you of what you may have forgotten. I highly and unreservedly recommend this book. |
