Book Description

September 2003
God rocks! At least for an ever-increasing number of the global population. With the present unstable and the future uncertain, fans are reassessing their lives. One area in which this reassessment is manifesting itself is popular music. Faith-based rock no longer need be associated with evangelical "happy clappers" with their rattling tambourines and hellfire imagery. A more sophisticated version of religion now permeates the airwaves and dance clubs. This book explores that growing trend in detail through a history of the movement and interviews with some of its most prominent purveyors, from U2 to Lenny Kravitz to Cold Play. Included is information on which bands with "God on their side" have reached the Top 10, as well as photographs, and profiles of 60 artists whose work is fueled by religion or spirituality such as Bono, Donna Summer, and Bob Dylan.

This book is just cool. Loved it. Joseph does a great job of telling many stories that would have never been heard.. If you're a follower of God and a rock' n' roll fan, read this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Who says Faith, God, & Rock n Roll can't peacefully coexist?, April 28, 2008

Silent Sky (Jonesboro, AR USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Faith, God, & Rock 'n' Roll (Paperback)
In this follow-up to his book "The Rock and Roll Rebellion", author Mark Joseph profiles many of the popular (and some not-so-popular) artists in the mainstream music industry who haven't shied away from sharing their faith through their music, but haven't necessarily clubbed people over the head with it, either.

This book was first published in 2003, so it's missing some obvious artists from the current music scene who should probably be included in a subsequent edition (Neal Morse, Flyleaf, Skillet, etc.). It's my hope that the author will consider releasing such an updated edition at some point in the future. The artists who are profiled include Creed, 12 Stones, Lenny Kravitz, Destiny's Child, Gary Cherone (Extreme/Van Halen), Kendall Payne, Jars of Clay, Lifehouse, Kirk Franklin, and many more.

This book, rather than rehashing too much of the content from the first book, focuses more on telling the stories of artists who have personified the ideals of the first book in their musical careers by refusing to be relegated to the halls of "Christian Rock", but have also refused to totally check their faith at the door. It's a very insightful and entertaining read. I would highly recommend it to anyone who's a musician or music fan who has ever pondered the question of "sacred vs. secular" when it comes to the music industry.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too much is taken from other sources., May 18, 2006
This review is from: Faith, God, & Rock 'n' Roll (Paperback)
If you have paid much attention to Christian music publications from the last decade or so you have already read a large portion of this book. It's not that it simply says the same thing, rather some of the artists sections are the exact same interviews that I had previously read in HM or the like.
