Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-8–Buller introduces Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Christianity, Buddhism, and Sikhism through the eyes of children. What constitutes faith and tradition is briefly explained and a world map indicates the main religion in each country. Following a thumbnail sketch of each religion, the text looks at its origin, founder, and practices. Sidebars include a brief discussion of a religious symbol, the holy book, rites of passage, a map and chart indicating the number of practitioners and where they live, and a list of the main festivals. On the next spread, children of the faith discuss what they hope to be or do, and, particularly, what they like about their religion. They discuss their beliefs, ceremonies, and practices. The concluding chapter looks at five additional faiths. Overall, the amount of information is adequate and straightforward and focuses on aspects of the religion that would appeal to children. The clear, vibrant photographs are especially inviting. For more specific details, try Jennifer Glossop's The Kids Book of World Religions (Kids Can, 2003) or Mary Pope Osborne's One World, Many Religions: The Way We Worship (Knopf, 1996).–Margaret R. From Booklist

Gr. 3-5. This all-in-one reference smoothly imparts the essence of the world's major religions and their roles in the lives of believers. An introductory spread explains the universals (faith is what people "trust, hold true, and are loyal to") followed by a world map, color coded by each country's main religion. The specific faiths are examined in successive chapters, with the remote facts about statistics, tenets, and ancient prophets, gods, and gurus followed by impassioned commentary from contemporary young believers. The book concludes with explanations of less-common faiths, including Zoroastrianism and Baha'i. The stream of religion-specific terminology can be dizzying, and it's confusing that the child to whom the first-person commentary is attributed is rarely featured in the photos. Nonetheless, the browsable format makes the book a comfortable option for children curious about beliefs that bring comfort and purpose to kids around the world. Jennifer Mattson

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book and a great gift, March 28, 2009
This review is from: A Faith Like Mine (Hardcover)
We are not the same faith as my in-laws so it can make gift giving for religious occasions a little tricky. This book has been great for us at First Communion time as it acknowledges a sacred moment in the child's life but doesn't "say" anything we don't believe ourselves. I also like the fact that it not only shows how different faiths celebrate the same event--such as a wedding--but also that people of the same faith in different countries or cultures might celebrate differently. At least in our family children and parents have responded positively.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice colorful introductory book on world religions, January 10, 2007

This review is from: A Faith Like Mine (Hardcover)
Very appealing and interesting for all ages. As a Baha'i, I am delighted that this book actually includes our Faith. We are, after all, the second most widespread religion in the world. It's nice to see that this book, unlike some others, included us and got with the program!

5.0 out of 5 stars Core values and practices of world religions, July 30, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: A Faith Like Mine (Hardcover)
My husband and I love the whole "... Like Mine" series, and bought most of them to give to our many nieces and nephews on their birthdays. We are an inter-racial couple and there are people from various ethnic and religious backgrounds in my husband's rather large family, so we both think this series is a great way to expose the children in our family to other cultures. We like "A Faith Like Mine" very much, because it presents simple facts and core values of the major religions around the world. I disagree with another reviewer that a negative trait of this book is that it focuses too much on the fundamental aspects of these religions. This is a book for children. It's not an in-depth study of world religions, but rather a way to expose them to something different and hopefully inspire them to respect and learn more about children with different faiths. I think this book does a good job just that.
