I have learned to look forward to anything written by Michael Paul Gallagher S.J. But this book in particular has invigorated my own faith journey in the company of these ten diverse yet God seeking faith explorers. I have savored every page. what a great "read" for Lent and all seasons of life!

Whether you're at the beginning of your journey towards faith, in the middle, or nearing the end to certain faith, Faith Maps by Michael Paul Gallagher, SJ has much to offer. In this secular age, we need writers who can help us find our way out of agnisticism (doubt) and unbelief (atheism). Christianity as merely fire insurance cannot accomplish the task and mere propositional Chrisdtianity (theology and degma)can take you only so far.

Profiling the lives and writings of ten well known (and some not as well known) religious thinkers, Fr. Gallagher uses his deep literary and theological learning to show us how they and we can find our way from a purly self-centered horizontal existence (beginning to uncertain end),to an appreciation of the vertical (a life beyond selfism)that provides meaning here and a purposeful meaning in the future.

From John Henry nNewman we learn that faith is not a subjective feeling but a gradual revelation of the mystery of Jesus. From Maurice Blondel we understand that there are gaps in our lives--an incompleteness if you will-- and a desire to fill the gap. With echos of Kierkegaard in the background, Blondel invites us to awake to our spiritual illness and realize that we cannot stand purely alone. This realization opens up to the theatre of desire.

The eminent 20th Century theologian Hans Urs Von Balthasar guides us far beyond intellectalism to help us see faith as beauty--the Glory of the Lord. For him, Christianity is not primarily communication of knowledge but reception and realization of God's yes to us before our yes as we experience the aesthetical beauty of God with us.

Bernard Lonergan shows us how to overcome the distortions within our culture and ourselves that block faith from our line of vision.

I found the book to be illuminating in its brief but accurate summation of the thought of these deep minds and spirits who have so shaped our thought today. Of particular relevance was the portrayal of the interplay between the subjective and objective elements of faith, a debate that plays at every level of religion today, whether articulated or not.

A Journey through Catholic Intellectual History in readable and literate language, and situated in the context of a secular world whose emptiness gasps for the humane, the hopeful and the Incarnate so powerfully shared through this study of Michael Paul Gallagher. His mastery of literature and theology make for a stimulating read.

This book just didn't say as much to me as I expected with this many spiritual masters contributing. Maybe I'm just not deep enough for this company!
