5.0 out of 5 stars Poignant quilts, oils, collages, masks, posters, and more, May 5, 2004
This review is from: Faith Ringgold (David C. Driskell Series of African American Art) (Vol III) (Hardcover)
Volume 3 of "The David C. Driskell Series Of African-American Art" from Pomegranate Publications, Faith Ringgold is an artbook by Lisa E. Farrington featuring the astounding and poignant quilts, oils, collages, masks, posters, and other artistic endeavors of female African-American artist Faith Ringgold, who is perhaps best known for the style of "super realism" that she developed by 1963, which in turn influenced the writings of James Baldwin and Amiri Baraka. An in-depth recounting of Faith Ringgold's life, including the schism of many years that putting her art and career before wifely duties caused between her and her second husband, complements the moving and meaningful artistic presentations ranging from a collage celebrating Black Women to a slightly warped yet all-too-real image of the American flag with an insidious message of hate subtly inserted in its stripes and stars, grimly reflecting the enduring racism to the point of lynching and murder that was rampant in 60's America and sadly remains pervasive up to the modern day. Faith Ringgold is a very highly recommended addition to Artist Biography and Contemporary Artbook collections.
