About the Author

Kevin Lowry is a convert to Catholicism and the son of a former Presbyterian minister. He and his wife Kathi met at Franciscan University, where they discovered the richness and beauty of the faith. After spending time as spiritual nomads, the couple met Scott and Kimberly Hahn, and faced the inevitable. They entered the Catholic Church at Easter Vigil, 1992.

Kevin and Kathi have eight children and live in the Columbus, Ohio area. Kevin was with a large CPA firm for many years before taking on various executive roles, and now serves as Chief Operating Officer of The Coming Home Network International, an apostolate that assists non-Catholic clergy and laity on the journey to the Catholic Church and beyond.

The story of Kevin's conversion appears in Patrick Madrid's popular book Surprised by Truth 2 and is entitled Son of a Preacher Man.

Kevin serves on the Board of Directors for Our Sunday Visitor and is President of the Columbus chapter of Legatus, and enjoys writing and speaking on many topics.

One of the strongest movements in the Church right now is the so-called New Evangelization. Sparked by Pope Paul VI, fueled by John Paul II, and flamed by Benedict XVI, this surge is meant to reawaken the world's dormant faith and pierce all layers of culture with the Gospel.

In Faith at Work: Finding Purpose Beyond the Paycheck (Our Sunday Visitor, paperback, 135 pages), Kevin Lowry shows us how to ignite the New Evangelization in the most common of places--the workplace. Most Americans spend most of their time on the job, which means the workplace is a vast mission field. But how do we spread our faith in such secular environments?

According to Kevin, not through obnoxious proselytizing. Instead we should develop a virtuous work ethic, ground our success on more than our title or salary, and display a resilient charity that brings light to the workplace. As Kevin explains, living our faith on the job is primarily about how we act day-to-day. He follows Pope Paul VI who noted, "modern man listens more willingly to witnesses than to teachers, and if he does listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses."

And Kevin's a great witness himself. Throughout the book he shares his wisdom on what's worked and not worked throughout his career. Yet the book is also packed with plenty of other examples. From the friend who abstains from office gossip, to the co-worker who finds meaning beyond the daily grind, Kevin's stories provide blueprints for effective witnessing at work.

If you're looking for a helpful, yet challenging guide to faith in the workplace, Faith at Work is it.

The Christians who impress me most, who really stand out as being especially intimate with God, never say what I expect them to say. Instead of telling me the "a" or "b" I expect, they say something completely original. Their love of God and years of intimacy enable them glimpse ways, paths, where I see only dead ends. That's what I like about Kevin Lowry and his Faith at Work: Finding Purpose Beyond the Paycheck.

Lowry has worn many different hats during his professional life: door-to-door salesman, accountant, senior vice-president at an international company, and now executive vice-president and chief operating officer of The Coming Home Network. Because of that, Kevin shares what he has actually lived. This book is filled with stories and through them, Kevin shares the hard won insights and principles that guide his work life as a Catholic Christian.

One of the most striking principles for me personally was drawn from his story of needing to find a new job, one that would allow him more time at home, when his seventh child, David, was born with a rare, congenital disease. That's a scary position for any parent, but add to it the stress of being the sole breadwinner, and you've got fertile ground for a coronary! But Kevin and his family came through it - with much prayer, a leap of faith, and then the right door opening; and Kevin learned a principle that I want to apply to my own incredibly busy life as a disciple, dad, and full-time employee:

"Assuming that [God] didn't set us up for failure, it follows that we always have time to do God's will. If we don't have time to do everything, there are items on our to-do list that shouldn't be there, or shouldn't be there right now.

This is not book about beating people over the head with religion within the work setting. Faith at Work will help you find greater purpose and fulfillment in the work you do and fire you up to share the benefits of your faith with others in the workplace. The benefits will overflow also to family and friends as work comes to take its proper place in a faith-filled life. With chapters like "Give me Patience, Quick!", "An Attitude of Gratitude", "The Beatitudes of Business," and "How to Treat the Janitor," this book is practical, down-to-earth, heartfelt, humorous, and wise. I had the pleasure to read it in advance, and now that I have it in the papery flesh, I'll be reading it again, one chapter per day every morning before work. This book should go far to take the sting out of Mondays.

There has been a growing attitude in recent years that religion has no place in the workforce. Conventional wisdom has held that religion is a private matter that people should attend to at home or in church if they wish, but not in public life.
This attitude runs absolutely counter to the teachings of Christ and the very nature of faith. If our belief in God means anything at all it compels us to reflect God's will in every aspect of our lives. Our jobs make up the majority of our waking hours and provide the greatest amount of our interactions with the world. How are we to be true to Christ if we suspend our beliefs during this critical time?
In his new book, Faith at Work: Finding Purpose Beyond the Paycheck, local Author Kevin Lowry provides a step by step primer on how faith can make our occupation more satisfying, our contribution to our employer more fruitful and our witness to the gospel more Christ like.
Lowry provides keen insight into how we can analyze our work lives and come to understand how our efforts can become more meaningful by offering up those efforts as a service to God and not just tasks for an employer. He addresses the critical issues that can come up in the workplace and provides ideas on how to use the message of the Gospel to deal with the pressures of work, conflicts between work and family obligations, and the challenge of applying Christian love in relationships with bosses, co-workers and customers.
After reading this book, you will have a much clearer concept of how, even in a very secular workplace, we can be effective evangelists for Christ through the example of our lives. Christ did not call holy men and religious scholars to be his first apostles. He called simple workers, many of them fishermen.
