Book Description

In an era of nasty political partisanship and vitriolic rhetoric, we might hope that followers of Jesus would stand above the fray. But Christians, by and large, don't distinguish themselves with a gracious politics--they play by the same rules as everyone else. How can believers find a better--a more faithful--citizenship for the 21st century?

Greg Garrett takes up this contentious and combustible issue in "Faithful Citizenship." In his celebrated, highly readable style, Garrett looks to key biblical texts as well as voices from Christian history, including St. Augustine, John Calvin, and America's Founding Fathers. Garrett challenges us to explore our political values and actions and models a more faithful approach to today's complex political world.

Chapters titles:

1. Love God, Love One Another: Toward a Christian Political Ethic
2. The Church and the State: The Two Cities
3. Unchristian Nation: American Christianity and Civil Religion
4. God’s Money, My Money, The Government’s Money?: Taxes, Rights, and Responsibilities
5. How Do We Know What Is Right? Choosing Life and Christian Love

PRAISE FOR GREG GARRETT AND "FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP":

"One of the most searching and honest of Christian writers today."

-- Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury and author of "Tokens of Trust"

“Greg Garrett is both a gifted writer and a deeply thoughtful follower of Christ. Whenever I read his work, I find a rare and moving mix of honesty—sometimes painful honesty—and tested hope, each made more valuable by the other.”
-- Brian D. McLaren, activist and author of "A New Kind of Christian," "A Generous Orthodoxy," and "Everything Must Change"

"We do, as the blessing/curse declares, live in interesting times. Fortunately, Greg Garrett is willing to engage the flummoxed faithful, helping us to navigate the challenging clash of religion and politics. As a man of faith who keeps a keen eye on politics, culture, and the church, Greg is just the person to assist us in finding our way toward becoming loving, informed, and yes, faithful 21st century Christian citizens."
-- Lucy Hogan, Hugh Latimer Elderdice Professor of Preaching and Worship, Wesley Theological Seminary, and author of "Graceful Speech"

"Faithful Citizenship" is an incisive treatment of the uneasy but crucial relationship of religion and politics in the lives of American Christians. With well chosen examples and a crisp writing style, Garrett shows how religious integrity and political commitments must and can be part of a full orbed life of faith and a national milieu in which respectful dialogue trumps “distinctly un-Christian adversarial politics.” "Faithful Citizenship" would be equally appropriate for a course syllabus or a small group study. A series of reflection questions at the end of each chapter serve as helpful guides to individual readers or small groups.

-- Alyce McKenzie, Le Van Professor of Preaching and Worship and Altshuler Distinguished Teaching Professor, Perkins School of Theology, SMU, and author of "Novel Preaching" and "The Parables for Today"

5.0 out of 5 stars Timely and Thought-Provoking May 8, 2012

I waited a few days to start reading this book after I got it because even though I have read several of Greg Garrett's books in the past, I've been feeling burned out on politics lately and wasn't sure I would enjoy this. In the introduction Dr. Garrett, a self-identified Democrat, lovingly and effectively changed my opinion about Ken Starr. I knew then that this book wouldn't just preach to a liberal/progressive Christian choir, but would actually challenge me toward personal growth. I found the chapter on taxes, rights, and responsibilities especially helpful.

As usual, I found Dr. Garrett's style clear and conversational without sacrificing substance.

I was reminded at Dr. Garrett's book signing last night that Jesus often challenged his listeners by not answering the question he was asked. He answered the questions they should have been asking. This book encourages us to reexamine the questions we are asking of ourselves when it comes to our political selves and structures. What kinds of questions should we be asking? And once we ask those hard questions how, then, should we respond? Do we increase our love of God and our neighbor by what we proclaim or enact?

2.0 out of 5 stars A little to biased for me September 22, 2012

I purchased this book hoping for a politically unbiased read on faithful citizenship. Too many times the author noted his own biases for one party over another and soon it became quite evident that this would be interwoven in the entire book. The book has good points in marking love of neighbor of prime importance. I probably would have liked the book if I was of the same political persuasion as the author. Instead, I had to put the book down before I could finish it. Love for neighbor did not follow though to those who want the same outcome from a different direction.

Faithful Citizenship is much overdue. In an easy-to-read, generous-hearted style, Garrett presents an unassailable case that neither Scripture nor tradition justify what is too often described as "Christian" politics in public discourse. His thesis is that, for Americans, faith and politics are too easily interchangeable, and that we tend to baptize our political leanings and call them Christian. Instead, he gives us a readable overview of what Christianity has taught over the centuries about the relationship of faith and politics. Garrett, a self-acknowledged democrat, shares his own stories of discovering Christ in his presumed political enemies with humility and humor, modeling the behavior he feels needs to mark our political discourse. The book is ideal for discussion groups or Sunday school classes. Each chapter ends with discussion questions. I am concerned about the fact that the book is exclusively electronic. That may undermine its obvious goal of being easily accessible for church groups and classes. Still, I applaud his attempt to keep up with our rapidly changing times, and I can't complain about the price!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful and Honest June 4, 2013

Thank you Greg for your work in helping us all think through how to engage in citizenship as Christians being faithful to the depth and breath of a nearly two thousand year long tradition.
If anyone is challenged by Greg's approach and/or socio-political stance (of which he is up front) I encourage them to jump to the appendix, which gives some wonderful insight into Greg and his process.

1.0 out of 5 stars Reminds me why I became Catholic March 16, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Read through this quickly and I'm very glad I did as a reminder of the confusion that comes from putting reasoning and analysis, powerful tools, before faith.

Keith Olbermann? Really? Source of a change of heart, discovery of truth, sudden realization of what it means to love neighbor as self ?

But there is lots in the book to learn from, politics of hate will not win on the long run.

My hope is that the author stays open minded and listens to Pope Francis and perhaps his local parish priest at least as closely as he did to Lkeith

5.0 out of 5 stars Faithful to see the big picture April 26, 2012

What I love about Greg's work is that he is not afraid to call all sides on the carpet for the ways in which they seek to live out the kingdom of this world or the kingdom of God. He is able to rise above his own specific beliefs about politics to see what is really at stake...people's lives. Thanks for this thoughtful, challenging work!
