Interesting, original, a good buy.,
This review is from: Faithlift (Audio CD)
Ever since first hearing And If Venice Is Sinking when it was first released I had wanted to listen to this CD. But it wasn't until I was at a used CD store in September of 98 that I happened to come across this album and listened to it. I liked what I heard and bought it. Another popular song from Faithlift is Sadness Grows, and just like And If Venice Is Sinking, it is a very catchy tune. But Spirit of the West does not seem to be about catchy tunes. If you listen to this album you will notice that it's real strength lies in the lyrics. Many of the songs also deal with religion so avoid this album if you think you might be offended by somewhat unfavorable references to the church. But if you like metaphorical lyrics with good instrumental backup you should pick this one up. Don't buy it if you are looking for your run of the mill rock.

If you haven't heard this album and you love good Celtic folk, you gotta hear "Sadness Grows", "And If Venice Is Sinking" and "The Guildhall Witness" and you will be very pleasantly blown away :). David Rehak

Simply a Amazing album. This is a album, if you actually listen to the lyrics, which talks about our society. None of the songs sound familiar, this band continues to grow. Unlike most bands, Spirit of the West doesnt feel they need to sound like there previous successful albums in order to grow and sound great. By far, one of the best Spirit of the West albums.

They don't give a damn about following the trends and they write lyrics with incredible depth. This is an awesome mellow CD and if you are a fan of them you will like the creativity they put into this one.

Most famous for the hit And If Venice Is Sinking this album offers much more than one good song. The best thing about it are the thoughtful lyrics and catchy melodies. Most definety worth the money.

Woe Canada,

As an American who came of age listening to one of Vancouver's very best bands, I am extremely disappointed to hear this drivel...Spirit of the West were writing great, British Columbian celtic music long before Great Big Sea came out of the kitchen... Anyway, ugh, there are enough alt-pop bands out there...what happened to "Gottingen Street", "The Crawl", "Mists of Crofton", and "Hounds Outside Your Door"? Ach well, turn your eyes to Newfoundland, Glasgow and Uig...

I didn't like this CD when I first got it, but I've grown to quite like it. Some nice songs on here and good musicianship.
