Biography

El Guapo was born as a two-piece in Washington, DC in 1996. Through the years and through various instrument/lineup changes, the band has continually blurred the lines between art-punk and the avant-garde. In the late 90s the band released two records on Resin Records as well as a CD of improvisational works on their own label, Mud Memory in 2000. In March 2001, El Guapo, then a 3 piece, began… Read more in Amazon's El Guapo Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, July 30, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Fake French (Audio CD)
Original, accessible, smart, simple, funny, virtuosic. The girl really cracks along. The first track is haunting and addictive; must have played it over twenty times. I've never heard anything like it. The fourth track is a masterpiece - all hyperbole aside. You know that feeling where you can't understand how a few fellas came up with that kind of sound, the ideas, what have you.... yeah. Here it is. Buy the *%$# out this record.

5.0 out of 5 stars absolute genius, May 10, 2005
By
This review is from: Fake French (Audio CD)
this is in CONSTANT rotation in my computer, ipod, brain, etc. and has been for quite some time now.

by far their most cohesive, catchy and accessible effort to date.

they've just changed their name to super/system becasue some completely terrible budweiser promoted band called el guapo got all angry when they realized good music was being made in their name by sincere artists. such is life.

there's not a song i don't like here.

it's brilliant.

ps: go see a show if you can! they play all the time!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, not great, March 24, 2005
This review is from: Fake French (Audio CD)
These guys have got lots of comparisons to labelmates Q and Not U and Black Eyes, but I don't think they really deserve them. El Guapo's focus seems to be on vocal harmonies, and the music really takes a back seat to them. While the singing is interesting, the lyrics are at best, typically disinterested dance punk stuff, and at worst, special ed quality. I mean, 'i see the squid and the squid sees me'? Sounds like Ralph from the Simpsons. But I digress - El Guapo experiments with a lot of ideas musically, and the vocals are a strong point. But on the whole, these guys just come up lacking.
