5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
Original, accessible, smart, simple, funny, virtuosic. The girl really cracks along. The first track is haunting and addictive; must have played it over twenty times. I've never heard anything like it. The fourth track is a masterpiece - all hyperbole aside. You know that feeling where you can't understand how a few fellas came up with that kind of sound, the ideas,...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, not great
These guys have got lots of comparisons to labelmates Q and Not U and Black Eyes, but I don't think they really deserve them. El Guapo's focus seems to be on vocal harmonies, and the music really takes a back seat to them. While the singing is interesting, the lyrics are at best, typically disinterested dance punk stuff, and at worst, special ed quality. I mean, 'i see...

5.0 out of 5 stars absolute genius, May 10, 2005

this is in CONSTANT rotation in my computer, ipod, brain, etc. and has been for quite some time now.

by far their most cohesive, catchy and accessible effort to date.

they've just changed their name to super/system becasue some completely terrible budweiser promoted band called el guapo got all angry when they realized good music was being made in their name by sincere artists. such is life.

there's not a song i don't like here.

it's brilliant.

ps: go see a show if you can! they play all the time!

While the singing is interesting, the lyrics are at best, typically disinterested dance punk stuff, and at worst, special ed quality. I mean, 'i see the squid and the squid sees me'? Sounds like Ralph from the Simpsons. But I digress - El Guapo experiments with a lot of ideas musically, and the vocals are a strong point. But on the whole, these guys just come up lacking.

4.0 out of 5 stars Strong musical presence, December 27, 2004
This review is from: Fake French (Audio CD)
I understand why this band has a following in Europe and in the US. I originally bought this CD because one of the musicians' mother is a friend of mine, put it in the player so that I could say I listened, and was hooked on El Guapo's music. Maybe the recommendation of a mom may not persuade anyone, but I will also tell you I passed it on to my teenage son and his friends, and they liked it too. I think the music is stronger than the lyrics, but I like the whole package. Try their earlier offerings, as well.
